Yes, but just be aware that large set can be awkward to hold and read unless you use a table or some sort of backing behind it. I own every version and I find these and/or the original releases to be the most enjoyable reading. These are much smaller overall than the original releases back in the 80s and 90s but still a great way manage the collection.

Don't have any suggestions for selecting one, though I'd personally start at the beginning. But regarding the other response, to just get them all - if you are gonna do that, then just buy the boxed 4 volume set from 2012, and available for $91 right now: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1449433251 - first of all, that's still the only option available right now (volume 5 of this set just came out, and there are two more not yet released), second, it actually ends up being cheaper (volume 5 is not discounted, so $21), and third, the older set includes extra materials, notes by Watterson, etc.

But back to the original Q, maybe for a kid who might be hard on the books, or you not sure will like them, just start with #1 for a lower intial investment, just get #1. If they love it, you could still jump to the full set for $91, or be content with waiting for them to release the final sets (possibly pay $20+ for each) as they come out.
ps. I read most of these as they came out, in the daily newspaper, and then I bought the complete set right when it came out in 2012, my kids in 5th and 9th grade both loved them to death too. It's now a bond we have, the appreciation of Calvin's twisted maniacal view of things ... priceless!
