watch constantly monitors your HR. If there's abnormalities like atrial fibrillation, it will alert you.

On newest Garmin's you need to manual put your fingers on bezel to do a reading
That is irregular rhythm notification which is different than ECG reading. Apple watch does continuous heart rate and rhythm monitoring as you described but you still need to touch to bezel if you need to capture single lead ECG recording.

Garmin has something called abnormal heart rate alert however it does not warn for rhythm irregularity. I think alerts you if your heartbeat goes above or below certain thresholds. To detect rhythm irregularities, you would need to use ECG feature which require touching the bezel.

I got this new in the 51mm version with a targeted coupon for $450. I'm having no luck trying to sell it locally so will probably return it. I would keep it except I don't like the white sides on the watch body.

What's so special about Garmin watches that they are so expensive? I replaced my Apple Watch with Fitbit and am very happy with that decision. Seems like these have more appropriate battery life so I'm a bit more interested in understanding the value proposition

I love this watch! Bought it used back in June for about $400, but I was looking to replace my Fitbit Charge 2 and also didn't really want to go the phone company smart watches. I use if mostly for running, golf, walking, hiking and would like to do more cycling and swimming (pretty much in that order). I like the stat/health tracking. I have it sync to myfitnesspal and let it manage my activity calories and overall daily calories so I can try and hit my calorie goals. To answer the question above about battery life, it's probably a YMMV based on your usage and the reconditioned state. According to Garmin's website, the 47mm has battery life of up to 16 days and 6 days of always on. For the person who said 28-30 days, I have no idea how you can squeeze that out of the 47mm. The 51mm spec says up to 31 days, so maybe that have that size (bigger watch has bigger battery). For me, I charge it every 6-7 days. Golf season around me is winding down, and 1 round of golf uses about 30% of the battery (gps, club tracking, me looking at the watch for yardage and other stuff). I run/walk 4-5 days per week at around 30-45 minutes on average. Lately, i haven't golfed, so that running/walking tracking with GPS is giving me that roughly 6 days. I think it's find though, considering all the tracking it's doingFor those who are interested in the golf feature, I think it's great! I had an older S62 (previously the S1? one of the original basic garmin golf watch). This looks better than the S62 having the AMOLED instead of MIPS. It also has all the same features I would use, like club tracking and that, but I think it's way better overall. I cannot imagine what the latest dedicated golf watches could provide that this can't. Unless you'd like to spend more time looking at your watch screen and less time golfing? I think maybe the newer fenix, or dedicated golf watch might have the green slopes. That might be a paid feature though, I'm not sure. And if people want to debate MIPS vs AMOLED. For me, I really wanted that bright, popping resolution with AMOLED. I was really disappointed with my S62 having the MIPS. I think I saw somewhere that it literally only has like 64 colors. I think I saw Fenix 7 might have 256. IMO, it "looks bad" with that colors, but also, the technology allows a MUCH BETTER battery life. People say it works better in the sun, but I have had ZERO issues with the AMOLED in sun. Still very easy to see. But, a MIPS screen would probably give a few more days of battery life.Overall, this is a very good price for a very good watch. I don't know if it's actively supported as it's been out a while, but any watch you buy will eventually be phased out of the update schedule. I did buy a used Forerunner 165 for the GF and the screen looks a little bit better aesthetically, so you get that with newer watches also. I couldn't justify buying a Fenix 8 over this as the Epix does everything I'd personally want it to do.
If anyone wants roughly 30 days of battery life, the Instinct 2 is what you should be looking at. I have one that is 2 years old and it still gets roughly that without GPS being used AND the backlight setting set to the lowest option. Still great and I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. Probably can get even more life out of a charge if you don't need/want the sensors running with the power saving mode.

how is Amazon refreshed quality? Is Amazon refurbishing it themselves or are these just returned products?

For some reason I've always had Fitbits fail in a little over a year. Mostly gotten them for free through work health insurance. They work fine for counting steps but Garmin watches are way more rugged.

The main proposition though is accurate GPS activity tracking with offline, routable maps and multi-day battery life. That's what makes the sport watches like Garmin and Suunto stand out over Apple and Android watches. WearOS and WatchOS are simply too bloated to every make it past 2 days even on the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The watch in this deal gets 16 days battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 32 hours of GPS + continuous heart rate tracking. For hiking, trail running, and biking, there basically is no other watch that gets adequate battery life with offline maps and GPS. I've tried hiking with the AWU and neither Apple's built-in custom routes nor 3rd party apps (which all require costly subscriptions) come close to the hiking experience on a Garmin (or Suunto).

The other big difference that you kind of just have to use Garmin to understand is that the software is written by developers who really engage in the sports that the watch is designed to track. That's a big difference between Garmin compared to even Suunto, but it's a world of difference compared to Apple and Google/Samsung. It's hard to describe, but the UX of the watch is designed to get out of your way and let you focus on exercise especially with the use of physical buttons and data screens. On Apple/Android watches you are always relying on the touch screen which is hard enough to use while moving, even harder to use when you're sweating, and impossible to use if you're wearing gloves (i.e. mountain biking), it's raining or you're in the water (i.e. swimming or diving).

Activity tracking on Apple/Android watches is incredibly basic and mainly just designed to give you a calorie count. Sure it can record your GPS for activities like running and biking but the GPS on the non-ultra Apple/Android watches are quite frankly terrible just due to using a cheaper and more inaccurate radio. My AW7 and GW7 don't even place me on the correct side of the street and it's always jittering around from one side to the other. Run a mile with an Apple/Galaxy watch and you'll end up running 1.1 miles. Even on a Fenix 6 with single-band GPS, the GPS performance is very accurate and flawless.

This is incredible helpful. Wish more people could see this. Thank you. Since you seem to be very knowledgeable about the brand, I'd like to ask for your opinion if this watch would fit my use case. 1) I do some HIIT workouts indoors and need accurate tracking of calories burnt and heart rates 2) I do some lap running indoors as well and would like it to be able to track lap times accurately without me explicitly pressing anything. Would that work?

I love this watch. I'm hard on my watches so sapphire is a must. The rim of the watch is titanium and that scratches easily. I have the larger version and get about 3 weeks battery life. I walk daily and go on a two hour bike ride, with heart monitor enabled, once a week. YMMV.
I would buy this watch again, recommended.
100%, very disappointed with their so-called titanium. very easily scratched bazel. Otherwise it's a good workout companion
