Can we use any generic refill adapter with one of these? Sorta presume so since they can't change the thread and function of the valve on the bottle?

yes, they do not require a proprietary fill valve like other brands

Assuming this is a much safer idea than refilling old Coleman bottles?

Waiting for all the "YoU cAn JuST reFiLL tHe chEAp OneS!!!!!" comments that argue that it's fine to refill the non-refillable ones (it's not) and there's no worries about safety (there are) just to save a couple dollars that come up in these threads all the time.

I got the FuelKeg [amazon.com]- which has a couple of improvements over this model - namely for me, was that the open/close port on FK one is an attached keyring. On this one, it's a randomly sized Allen key. Also - the FK comes with a small collapsible stand - much easier to store than the huge one that you'd use with this product. Just note that, for that one, you'd need to keep your larger tank on a table or something elevated surface.

Neat. I have the larger version that pairs with a 20lb tank and just used it for weeds last weekend.
