it may be like the Spider-Man Miles Morales upgrade where you get the upgrade benefits but lose access when your ps+ expires (you get Spider-Man remaster that way but lose Miles Morales so you'll likely keep the dlc)

Like others said, it will only work if you have the ps+ subscription unless you buy the game. If your subscription expires, you won't be able to play it, but if you subscribe again it will still be there again.

Do you need to beat the game to access the DLC? I completed the story on my Xbox but wouldn't mind playing the DLC on PlayStation.

I believe you can access the night springs expansion from the main menu. The lake house expansion is triggered from a conversation with a character towards the end of the game. Not sure if thats in the menu.
