So I just pulled the trigger last night on the base model for $140 open-box: i3-1315u, 8gb/128gb. Research showed there's an extra RAM slot and the SSD is upgradeable. Other than the i5, the RAM/storage are the only differences, I think, and those are cheap to upgrade. So I'll probably pick mine up and keep it (cheap laptop for the kids).
The negatives are no backlit keyboard and (I think) proprietary charging only, but I will confirm once I get it.

That's a nice deal.
That version has been on sale for $210 new at Best buy. Biggest downside is the screen is not ips. So didn't look good even at fairly small off angles.
Some vivobook 14 variants do have ips screens. Anyone know what kind of screen the i5 variant has?

I picked it up last night. It's very basic but seems solidly made. USB-C charging didn't work so far. No backlit keyboard. Yes, the 16:9 14" screen has narrow viewing angles but it's fine for a single person (definitely not very bright, though). There's active warranty through April 2026 on this; it's always a crapshoot with open-box models. System speed is quick even without RAM upgrade, and it's got a deep, comfortable keyboard. We'll play around with it and see if it's worth keeping.
