These energizers in blue packaging seem to be the best quality. I've bought some in red packaging from Amazon and they're evvvverrrr so slightly smaller, maybe fractions of a mm, and it causes them to be loose in some devices.

Is it true that the bitter coating makes the contact weak in AirTags?

Yes the coating can cause problems, but a little rubbing alcohol takes the coating right off

So I just need some rubbing alcohol and I can start eating these again?

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank sirmium

here is a pro tip: order Bulk from DigiKey, even after paying for shipping ends up being cheaper then this, ~30 cents a battery plus ~$5 shipping. I usually get 20-30 at the time for $12-15

eg. i got Murata ones for 27 cents if you order 10+, Murata is reputable brand

Last week, I had an urgent need for a coin battery during night time when Costco was closed. I had a go to Safeway to get a battery and it was about $6 for one battery.

Ridiculous pricing at B&M stores and then they complain of less foot traffic.

How's the counterfeit situation on these from Amazon?

I'm interested in knowing too. Seems like the stuff I bought only last a few short weeks

Yes the bitrex coating is water soluble and not permanently bonded to the battery itself. It'll come off even if you scrub with a dry napkin long enough. My habit is to use alcohol around electronics since it dries much faster. You can even use distilled water if you have it instead; distilled water is non-conductive.

I had never heard that, so I googled it. Thanks for the info. Learn something new every day.

I gave up on buying coil cell batteries from Amazon because I kept getting junk. I'd order a brand name, with brand name pictures in the listing and shipped from Amazon and they'd show up in a plastic baggy and not work right.
I buy from Digikey now

It's been this way with batteries for a long time. You are paying for convenience when you get them at a store.

Except it becomes conductive once you start dissolving things in it. Will the battery coating make it conductive, I don't know, but generally it's not great to rely on distilled water being non conductive if you are dissolving stuff with it. I'd personally avoid using distilled water on electronics.

That's bs. If you're getting that type of stuff from Amazon repeatedly then you're just buying from the worst seller ever or the worst ad ever.
