Anyone seen other good deals on better ones in the $100-$150 range?
Long story short, get a Dobsonian telescope. Dobsonian is a mount type, but it's come to refer to the type of telescope it is, Newtonian reflector.
All my research says the best bang for your buck is a Dobsonian. 4.5"-5" tabletop ones are great. 6" to 8" are freestanding but huge and less portable.
The trick is, not every Dobsonian is a true Dobsonian apparently?
Steer clear of Bird and Jones types. It is also a Newtonian but it apparently sucks.
Basically what I got to with Gemini is that I need to spend MINIMUM $150 for an even HALF decent used Dobsonian. $200 is a safer zone for a quality scope.
Cheap telescopes are known as hobby killers because they suck so bad, people give up on astronomy.
Long story short. Go play video games or watch a movie instead.
