I'd say no, as the drive comes with a 5-year warranty and impressive specs that should easily last you 10+ years, given the 2.5M hours MTBF.

If you're spending a significant amount of money, you want something durable and reliable. Cry now and enjoy the quality and reliability; besides, it's not much more expensive than a "refurbished" enterprise drive, which usually costs around $160.

Used drives were more appealing when they were much cheaper, but now, with a brand-new Gold drive available for just a bit more, buying used doesn't make financial sense IMO.

There's also a 20% CB offer if you search for it (can't share specifics). It's a quirky deal; add the drive to your cart with the extension installed and active, leave the WD site for a while, and you'll get an email with the 20% CB. Good luck

yes , although not designed for it. this is read write. surveillance hdd is designed for mostly write and has minor lagging with reading. you want your surveillance to not be skimming on recording lol. we're talking minor diffs but that is the distinguishing feature.also - coupon unavailable if previously used apparently. wd blocks checkout

Good deal considering prices compared to a few years ago. It may only go slightly lower during Black Friday.

I don't think you can overkill on a NAS, just over pay

is this good to use for regular storage? I was hoping for a good sale on 12TB WD Blue or 10TB WD Black.

Coupons on WD don't stack. To get this deal, you need to enter WDGOLD. When you "leave" and they send you the email to entice you, that 20% off coupon applies to the non-discounted price.

FWIW, I'm running 15 Red Pro 14TBs in a NAS and have never had a single issue. They're rock solid.

In my opinion, it's a much better option than purchasing a "refurbished" drive that's likely been heavily used in a corporate environment.
Do you have any data to backup such an assertion?

The 20% discount isn't related to WD or its site; it's a separate entity altogether, so it doesn't involve "stacking."

Unfortunately, I can't elaborate further here due to forum restrictions. Just make sure to take a snapshot of the finalized purchase with the 20% active, as this entity can be somewhat unreliable, and proof of the 20% will likely be needed to enjoy the promised cheap basterd delights.

Dude, what's better? A brand-new WD Gold drive with a 5-year warranty or a "refurbished" drive that's been raped for over 5 years in a corporate environment? It's not rocket science, man; just enjoy the deal and stop trying to give me a hard time...

$17.14/TB? Someone wake me up when we get back down toward $12/TB. This market is ridiculous.

There are risks with used enterprise drives, but a 14TB used enterprise drive (look for Ultrastar HC530, great drive) is at or under $10/tb all day. You do you but I'll pay $100 less for used. Most enterprise drives are not "heavily used". I probably abuse my HDDs at home more than most corporate environments. I have 20 years in IT corporate environment (currently Security Engineer) to back up that opinion. Certain applications can wear on a HDD more than others, but most of them are just sitting idle for 99% of the time. They have a ton of power-on hours because they're on 24/7 primarily in datacenter environments that have better temperatures and airflow than most consumer desktop environments.
