You basically acknowledged 9's and 10's are more popular. Your analogy makes no sense though. We are talking string gauges not music genres.
My analogy makes plenty of sense. the most popular doesn't mean the best.

There is no "best". There are many scale lengths, tunings and playing styles. Using a heavier gauge doesn't make you a tough guy.

It has nothing to do with being a tough guy.

Tone and response along with tuning stability. Most people playing 11s are also likely not playing 64th notes at 120BPM.

A bit like saying actual tortoise shell picks are not the best. Well, yes other than the fact they are now illegal to buy, do have properties that make them superior to the plastic garbage that is on the market.

Most realistic way it hit up antique stores and find genuine antique products make out of the material and make your own. It is legal if you have some providence that the item is a genuine antique. This is not cheap though and becoming increasingly rare.
