After 30 years in this hobby, Im shocked these things still sell. Filters like this shouldn't even be made anymore. Cartridge based filters are not only a waste of money, they are damaging to the beneficial bacteria that should be building in your filter. Save the money and have a safer approach to your aquarium BB colony, and go with an Aquaclear/Fluval HOB filter or a canister. They come with a sponge that is easily removed and rinsed under a sink to clean out the gunk. They also come with a media bag, which is what you want in your filter to grow you BB. Cartridge based filters hurt aquariums more than help.

Repped the aquarium deals. This is a good deal but not my favorite filter.

Be aware there is no flow toggle. It's one speed/flow only

I don't use these, but they would work without the filter if you just wanted something that moved water around the tank, right?

I switched from these cartridge based filters to sponge filters about a year ago and my aquarium looks much healthier! Plus I never have to swap filters and sponge filters don't kill baby shrimp like the cartridge ones do. Every once in a blue moon I clean out the sponge but ever since I got rid of the majority of my snails, all has been good, I just top off the water. Go with sponge filters!

What effect did getting rid of your snails have?
