Arrgh I just built with a 7800x3d a few months ago. I don't need it but...I want it.

That's false. I literally bought a 9900X for $306 during Prime Day in July and that was the cheapest I could find one for so $500 would be price gouging to nth degree.

For casual gaming, is this overkill? If limited on money, is saving up for a better GPU better than buying a high end CPU?

That would depend on the application this CPU would be utilized for. Say you did content creation for YouTube w/ "PC gaming" as your "allure" or main talking point then this CPU would def foot the bill especially when needing to export files in post production which could be the difference between a few minutes vs an hour or more. You said it yourself, you casually game so based on how much of a budget you currently have, if the use case for this CPU will mainly be for productivity then I would rather have a high-end CPU than a better GPU. However, you can always upgrade either or for something better later down the line.

I was able to snag an open box one for $404 from Micro Center last week w/their credit card ($425 otherwise) to upgrade my 7900X. Since my rig is mixed used, I needed more cores than the 9800X3D (which cost more) but couldn't justify the $600 spend on a 9950X3D for video editing. When the 9900X3D came out it got slagged for its $600 MSRP compared to $480 for the gaming part and $700 for the big boy. But it's not a bad CPU, just a poor value at $600. One review showed their math for calculating value and at $500 it leaps into the good value range, so $404 is a bargain. Paired it with a $855 RTX 5080 and Cyberpunk 2077 maxed out path-tracing clears 180 fps at times and my display only goes to 165 Hz.

it's really just a 6 cores in disguise for gaming. Avoid.

I wouldn't get this CPU because it's not priced appropriately. Only six of the cores have the 3D cache where with the 9950X3D 8 cores do because it's basically two 9800X3D chips. This chip is two Ryzen 5 9600X3Ds. Pros and cons of course, but for the price a 9800X3d is a better buy IMO if you don't wanna fork over the cash for a 9950X3D.
