I have the non-LCD version attached to the garage fridge. If you're okay with needing to use your phone to check the temperatures it's a cheaper option. I do recommend waiting for black friday, though. I vaguely remember paying $30 for the ones I have.
And despite reports that these sensors will work with the Gateway 2.0 that comes with the newer rectangular Govee leak detectors, I was never able to get them to pair with it.

External display is good for checking temps without opening the fridge, like in power outages when even the app will go down (i think, not sure if it works local if your hub and router are on UPS)
I have the non lcd one with the gateway, isp modem and my switches all on the ups. The freezer is full of meat and in the basement where we only go to check on things once a week and to grab some meat when needed, so an lcd isn't really necessary for us, but it would be for some who walk by the fridge/freezer regularly.

If you have a zigbee system (like smartthings) I got the new wire Sonoff SNZB-02LD thermometer:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FCG8N5NC/

Only $20, and works great for my deep freezer.
The zigbee works inside the freezer?

Just wondering why you'd need this. Do you need to know the exact temp. of your fridge?

I have Govee water checker thing under my fridge in case it dies but trying to figure out why I'd need to know the exact temp.

Not sure if this particular model works for freezer temps, but I got a similar device for my freezer. Twice I had over packed the freezer, causing the temp to drop (the first time I had blocked the air vent, the second something shifted and popped the door open), and had to throw out most of the food since I didn't catch it before most things had thawed too much. Having a temperature monitor would have alerted me before any of the food had thawed.

First, to answer your question. Yes, I had a wireless zigbee thermometer on the inside of the freezers lid, but you need to buy lithium batteries, alkaline can't take the cold.

Second: The sonoff LD model I linked has a thermometer on a wire, like the one OP linked.

This sounds useless. If lower is out, at least you know the temperature šŸ¤’? Then what? šŸ˜‚

The temperature may fall for other reasons. Compressor failed, someone left door open, etc.

Yes, but battery life will be short, have the 3rdreality temp/humidity ones with aaa batteries, lasts about 4 months, wile the fridge is going on 2 years

We have a fridge that holds medications for the family that can be thousands a month, so we very much want to know if the fridge has lost power or is left open for some reason.

I really like the idea of this, but having something disrupt the seal around the door is not a great idea.
I had wondered about how this would work as well, but the wire is pretty flat. The freezer in basement seems unfazed by it -- no cold air leakage at all.

There are uses, been when away from the house and the power fails temp was too high, but went back down once power was restored, so alarms can be set to be notified. With the addition of power monitoring, it has been useful when the inverter board has been acting up, can see when with the lights or defrost not turning off causing additional heat.

I agree its not for everyone, but for those who want to stay informed its a useful tool.

Yeah, this is why I bought it.

I bought the non-lcd version for 29.99 several weeks ago.
I have an old refrigerator & freezer & both have to be getting close to the end of their life cycle. I am hoping the sensor allows me to see when one of them fails as quickly as possible as well as being alerted if the door has been left open.

I was not impressed with the alarm that is on the part of the sensor that is magnetically attached to the door though, but the phone & email alert is probably sufficient -- not likely going to hear that alarm mounted on the unit unless you are pretty close.

I have a dumb monitoring unit on my chest freezer that just alarms audibly if the temp gets to high, it definitely builds up a bunch of frost around where the cable disrupts the seal. But the cable for mine is round so not optimal.
