It can be purchased right now: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C6W3D4RM But that new device is trash. Wifi 5 and 1gb memory is so outdated. I'm not sure what Amazon was thinking.

Yep, absolute taking a step back to 2021 on the new "select" 2025 release. This 4K stick the OP listed is the one to buy or the ONN 4K Plus for $30, same specs as the 4k but adds double the storage memory and significantly better cpu/gpu performance.

That's a different device - "Fire TV Stick 4K Select", a cheaper version for "essential" streaming.

What is the difference between the "new name" model and the "old name"? They both have half off, but the link is to the old name but I would think the new name would be a better deal?

The main differences are the operating system, audio/video features, and app support. The new Fire TV Stick 4K Select uses the new Vega OS, which does not support sideloading apps but can stream some apps from the cloud, and it lacks Dolby Vision, though it still supports HDR10+. The Fire TV Stick 4K uses the traditional Fire OS, has a larger memory, and supports Dolby Vision and Wi-Fi 6, making it a more capable device for streaming and gaming.

So which one do you recommend? Thanks!

Amazon devices are trash and extremely poorly supported. They seem steadfast in their refusal to make their firesticks anything but novelty devices and update them (or downspec them) to modern standards.

Max > Plus > Select.
I have Max which is also on sale and $10 more than the Plus. Max is the top-tier option, with a faster processor for quicker app launches and smoother navigation. With double the storage (16GB), you'll have more space for apps and games if you care about that.

It's the new 2025 model. Amazon had a live video conference showcasing their new products and that's the new Amazon TV stick. They didn't show off or announce any other fire tv stick for 2025. This new Fire TV Select stick DOES NOT use android anymore. Amazon is going to clamp down on what apps you can put on the device. No more sideloading apps (not unless people come up with a workaround). It uses a new Operating System made by Amazon called "Vega".

Amazon just ruined what they had going. Everyone is going to move towards the walmart ONN devices now. Or simply stay on the older Amazon sticks. I'm not sure if Amazon is going to discontinue the older models. I imagine they will at some point. Those new "4K select" devices are a disaster to say it lightly. I imagine the reviews for it are going to be terrible on Amazon's own website.
