Great deal on the 8TB SSD, but seriously, why didn't they go with USB3.2 gen 2 instead of gen 1 (460MB/s)? It's gonna take at least 5 hours to read/write 8TB of data.

Exactly. I'd grabbed it if it were Gen 2

this drive is not meant for that I don't think. the next gen of T7 shields/ T9's will most likely be 8tb and Gen 2 (hopefully). I currently use this exact drive for backing up my 8tb MacBook Pro via Time Machine. My hard drive carry case has 6 T7 Shields, 2 T9's, and this 8tb T5. I used to also have Sandisk drives in there, but after their Pro Extreme mishap, plus 2 of my drives showing signs of death, I've completely moved away from them except for unimportant transfers.

Four years ago I added a USB 3.2 gen 2x2 card to my PC which is 20 Gb/s or 2,500 MB/s so I would be ready for external storage like this. Makes me mad.

It's a custom PCB with a Type-C connector soldered on. It's not shuckable.

If it has the same internals as the 2TB T5 EVO, there is no point using Gen 2.

I grabbed some 2TB T5 EVOs at Wally World for $60.

My posts are in this thread: https://slickdeals.net/f/18619390-ymmv-walmart-in-store-only-clearance-samsung-2tb-t5-evo-portable-s...

CrystalDiskInfo says UASP SATA/600.

That will not get anywhere close to Gen 2. But what it does get is fine for my use case.

The T8 would be a tough buy at the $400 price point when the 8 TB Crucial X10 with more than double the transfer rate on a std. USB 3.2, 4 times on a USB 3.2 2x2 dual lane, plus IP 55 water resistance and warranted for 3 years is just $40 more at B&H right now.
