And the percentage of the population with a pocket hole jig and/or pine wood just hanging around? 0.0001%

Yeah, but the pine would cost you nearly as much as this does, then add in the hardware, stain, and most importantly, time. You'll have a higher quality finished product, but it's not a money save unless you enjoy these kind of DIY projects and already have the tools and accessories.

Unless you screw the top to the wall it will lean forward away from the wall.

My teenage son built this in woodworking class, they did it in an hour, thats how easy it is and he's not good at much around the house except playing video games

Sure. And did your son bring all his woodworking tools to school? Or did the woodworking class have all the woodworking tools available?

A regular bookcase the same height and width would hold more books

Your son built it in a woodworking class - where the teacher had already researched the design, already made the jigs, had already laid out the necessary tools, was there to instruct and help with any head scratchers, and had a whole shop full of equipment and accessories on standby if needed.

That's kind of like assembling a piece of IKEA furniture after someone else has already sorted all the parts, labeled the bags, and laid out the tools - sure, it goes quickly, but only because the hard work was already done.

Like assembling IKEA furniture, making this would not be hard, and most folks could figure it out. But it's going to take a regular person who doesn't have access to a whole freaking woodshop well over an hour. If you want it to look halfway decent, the sanding and staining alone is going to take longer than that.
