I just applied/got my visa this past week (took 4 days). The new online only process is very simple/easy. If you aren't in a city with a Chinese embassy, then you can utilize an "agent" who will pickup/drop off etc your app. Cost for a 10 year L (tourist) visa is $140.

Also, you no longer need an itinerary, proof of booking, invites etc. All that is old news.

Just apply for a tourist visa. It's not that complicated.

The visa rules for China are difficult. You can get a visa after some work. Or you can do visa free for 10 days, but only in certain areas and if you are flying to another country. So round trips may not work? Or you can do 7 days in more places, same as below.

In any event I think you'd need a visa to do a round trip and it seems cumbersome to get. I'm still not perfectly clear on how it all works.

Just apply for a tourist visa. It's not that complicated.
