Community Reviews
This IdeaPad Slim 3 looks like a strong budget productivity laptop, with a Ryzen 5 8540U, 300 nit touch IPS screen, USB C charging, and a 60Wh battery that stands out at this price. The memory is upgradeable, with an 8GB soldered module plus one DDR5 SO DIMM slot that can reach 24GB total, and the SSD can be expanded with some effort. The main tradeoffs are the cut down port selection, no USB4, HDMI 1.4, and uncertainty around external monitor refresh rates. It feels like a capable everyday machine if you can live with the leaner I O and modest base storage.
Tinkerers planning a RAM or SSD upgrade, because the memory and storage are user-upgradeable and the swap process is straightforward.
Students and office workers who keep many browser tabs open, because adding a 16GB DDR5 SODIMM works and noticeably improves performance.
Light productivity buyers who want a cheap Windows laptop, because the processor is strong for everyday work and the screen is a decent mid-tier IPS panel.
Casual home users who mainly email and browse, because 8GB RAM and 256GB storage are enough for basic use.
External-monitor users who need smooth 4K output, because HDMI 1.4 limits the built-in video output to 30Hz.
People who want a fully equipped port selection, because it lacks USB4, HDMI 2.1, and even 10Gbps USB 3.2.
Buyers who want to avoid opening the laptop for storage upgrades, because moving beyond the 256GB drive requires cloning and hardware work.
Gamers expecting strong graphics performance, because the processor is described as mediocre for gaming.

Is it 16GB total (so the max ram that the 1 DIMM slot supports is 8GB?) Or does the 1 DIMM slot support a maximum RAM of 16GB (making it 24GB total?) Also, when the memory is uneven (8GB paired with 16GB), is there any negative effect?
Thank you

Get this or wait for Thanksgiving?

Would you suggest them buying this lenovo laptop instead since it's basically the same price? How is the screen compared to the acer chromebook plus 14 that is currently on discount at costco online? I already bought it for myself already. Would you say I should return the acer chromebook and buy this one for me? The main thing is I web browse and download things so I might get malware and virus but since with a chromebook, I'm not concerned because I don't do any financial things on it unless I powerwash my chromebook and then do financial things on it then powerwash it again. The only way this windows lenovo would be good for me would be if I install linux right? However, how long would it take for me to do a clean reinstall though? Since I download files that might contain malware on linux, it isn't safe to do financial things on it unless I do a clean reinstall right? I know a clean reinstall on windows takes like an hour. With chromebook, powerwash takes total of 10 minutes at the most. So what about linux?
For the person that wants to a buy a laptop, would you suggest this windows lenovo laptop or the chromebook? Now if the acer chromebook was very bright screen and there is no issue with connecting iphone and transferring photos very easily, that person would buy the same acer chromebook I have. Me mentioning you don't have to be concerned about malware is a reason why that person wanted a chromebook as well though that person isn't going to be downloading files that might contain malware. That person might visit some of these sites though to watch movies and tv shows that are piracy sites and thus lot of ads. So if they do that, go with chromebook?
The ram it seems you can go up to 24gb total so that is pretty good still? 8gb is still okay right? I know 8gb is the absolute minimum for a windows laptop these days. 256gb is more than enough for the hard drive space but you could add a hard drive? But how is the screen compared to the acer one? Seems rare for a good windows laptop to be at this price right? I read very rare for a windows laptop to have these specs and a decent screen at the $300 price range.
Also Lenovo dropped my a $25 reward last week for being a member so that was a nice bonus.
Would you recommend this laptop?
Hdmi 1.4 and 30hz. Isn't that a big issue if you connect it to an external monitor? I read you want 60hz minimum for an external monitor when connecting from laptop otherwise it lags? Or that is related to 4k monitors only? So connecting it to an external monitor regardless of monitor's resolution or anything or isn't going to be smooth? It does have a usb-c port so that connects to 4k monitor and 60hz right? So you can connect 2 external monitors but the hdmi will be lagging and not smooth? Or that isn't noticeable?
It charges with the barrel and not usb-c? So this isn't good since you can't charge it with a powerbank right so this would bother some people? I'm curious but if you have a Dell PW7015L barrel powerbank which I have, would you be able to use that with this laptop if charging it? Of course using a powerbank charger when you have no access to a power outlet and your battery is low on laptop.
What is the battery like on this? 60whr means probably how long when web browsing or youtube or movie?
