This IdeaPad Slim 3 looks like a strong budget productivity laptop, with a Ryzen 5 8540U, 300 nit touch IPS screen, USB C charging, and a 60Wh battery that stands out at this price. The memory is upgradeable, with an 8GB soldered module plus one DDR5 SO DIMM slot that can reach 24GB total, and the SSD can be expanded with some effort. The main tradeoffs are the cut down port selection, no USB4, HDMI 1.4, and uncertainty around external monitor refresh rates. It feels like a capable everyday machine if you can live with the leaner I O and modest base storage.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The board has 8GB soldered DDR5-5600 plus one DDR5 SO-DIMM slot, and the documented maximum is 24GB total with a 16GB stick. Adding a 16GB module is reported to improve performance noticeably.

    ValueRangerwonniepoohsurfeversurfever

  • Yes, but it is not a simple drop-in swap for most people. The storage path involves opening the laptop and cloning the existing 256GB NVMe to a larger drive; Lenovo specs also mention a 2242 M.2 PCIe Gen4 SSD with a second upgradeable slot that can support up to 1TB.

    cation_anionArkHillBillie2099fb88Alpha__Omega

  • It is described as strong for productivity and basic everyday use, with the Ryzen 5 8540U's 4 efficiency cores and 2 performance cores helping at this price. It has also been reported to run Sims 4 and GTA V, though the integrated graphics and budget I/O keep it in the mid-tier range.

    cation_anionkirsionOhHimMemorableHealth5786

  • Yes over USB-C DisplayPort: the spec sheet lists 4K@60Hz support. HDMI is only version 1.4, so the USB-C video output is the better option for a smooth external display.

    OhHimFuschiaDeer1674LabRat810

  • Yes, it can charge through USB-C. The charging support appears to be limited to about 35-40W, so it is not a full-power USB-C charging setup.

Adding 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM is coming up to $425 total (279 + 80 (1TB) + 66 (16GB RAM) = $425)

Sorry for my ignorance, but is this a good price? or is there other alternatives to it with better price? I can wait for Thanksgiving sale too but not sure if I will find a better deal than this. Appreciate any insights. Thanks.
It plays si,s 4 and gta v. ticks all the boxes

Same here, back in stock but coupon no good. Too bad -- my daily driver just died and for my purposes this would have been a no brainer.

The spec sheet has a pretty odd comment about that indicating it only supports up to 16GB sticks:

Max Memory[1]
Up to 24GB (8GB soldered + 16GB SO-DIMM) DDR5-5600 offering

Notes:
[1] The max memory is based on the test results with current Lenovo® memory offerings.

https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/...0_Spec.pdf

Found a good deal at best buy for a DDR5-5600 SODIMM 16GB stick from crucial for $56 (- $10 best buy cert I have in my account), so ordered that today and hoping the 8GB soldered plays nice with a 16GB SO-DIMM DDR5 (as I've generally been told to match memory sizes for peak performance, but don't know how SODIMM/DDR5 works).

Picked up a 256GB SSD as well for $28 from amazon, so at $364 total for this with 24GB RAM and 512GB memory, I'm pretty happy. Just had to order a new screwdriver kit to work on it though as I didn't have the right torx one.

Realized the laptop is a bit slow with the 8gb and 256gb drive. Do you think there's going to be better deals out there for BF ?

Probably, but often either time or number limited.
Miss it by 2 minutes too late, or order # 1122 out of 1100 units at sale price.
Maybe best to buy what looks good today, put it in a safe place, and keep your eyes open for a great BF deal.
You can always return one, or, the other.

Thanks, Lenovo only gives you 30 days from delivered date to return (like Amazon). Will keep a lookout!
