I do have a $12 code scanner in the trunk too.

What's with this thread? Why are people shocked that someone might have a couple tools in an old junky car?

This has saved me from the side of the road twice. Must buy if you are driving a beater car.

Alternator, water pump, belts, sensors, battery... almost anything.

You carry all those spare parts in your car too? And diagnostic tools as well?

Their website shows that the sale price ends on Dec 31. Unless you need it now, it might be worth seeing what comes along during BF.

you keep it in your car? what did you need to use it for on the side of the road?
last repair on my car was a fuel line that came off the fuel pump. needed to undo a couple bolts to access it and get it back on there. also used it to replace a belt on my sister's car at a family gathering once

I just bought a 2013 Town & Country with a 110,000 miles over the weekend, and yes this or something similar is going in it soon.

For Chrysler products there are cheap ODB software products (bidrectional that have programming/relearn functions) you can buy, either DiagFCA if you have a cheap Windows laptop lying around or AlphaODB for Android. They interface with the car with a USB or Bluetooth dongle, I just ordered a compatablie one from AliExpress for $10 from AliExpress. There's also FORScan for Ford products, I'm sure there are similair options for other manufactures. My point is there's no reason not to have high level diagnostic tools in your car at all times.

Edit: A lot of times you can get the car to limp to limp to a parts store, or a parking lot and you can uber, ect. I have a horror story about getting completely ripped off by a mehanic when my alternator died on a road trip in the middle of nowhere. I had no tools or no knowledge on how to use them if I did, it really sucks being such easy prey for complete scumbags like that.

Keeping tools in the trunk is one thing and totally reasonable. Keeping a $100 set of tools in the trunk of a beater is another. Being able to troubleshoot and repair a car that just broke down in the middle of the road with basic tools and an incomplete set of wrenches, with no spare parts sounds fishy. Being able to use "high level diagnostic tools", but cant diagnose/replace an alternator sounds completely absurd.

I used to have a fun car that wasn't the most reliable and I always kept an ODB reader and small set of tools in the trunk. It saved me multiple times. Once, the turbo blew off the factory rubber throttle body inlet pipe. I was able to coast off the main road to a shopping center parking lot. Popped open the hood, saw the issue, and was able to easily tighten the tube back on using my tools. Soon after, I replaced that part with an aftermarket stainless steel piece that fixed this known issue.

Agreed. Weirdest "take" I've seen. "There's a guy out there occasionally fixing his car with a tool set he bought at Lowe's. IMPOSSIBLE!" So dumb

Didnt people used to say its hard to work on Euro cars bec of expensive metric tools?

Is that fubar now or is it bec these tools comprise only of like 10% of all the tools u need to work on these cars?
I don't even keep sae tools in my tool boxes anymore. everything is metric except I do keep a 1/4" socket and some SAE allen and crescent wrenches.
