Lol interesting ! so they would take it from customers for $15-20 rebate in exchange on new as then sell it back for $50 in new packaging.

That's not quite true. The newer model (2021+) has a larger screen within the same size body, and has adjustable warm lighting (which has actually made a huge difference for me).

2018 was the model many paperwhite users said felt like a downgrade from the previous gen. People were saying the only reason they would upgrade was if they really wanted the waterproof feature, otherwise, the previous gen was better. I think it had to do with the screen not being as sharp and responsive as the previous model, can't recall all the reasons anymore. At the time I was seriously interested in upgrading, but decided to wait based on user comments.

At this point, I'd get the 2021 if I were in the market and skip the 2018 (I have the 2021 model, decided to also skip the 2024 model due to so many having quality control issues/yellowing of screens).

I think I have the 2021 model (has USB-C charging, among other things), but was $90 on Woot, used.
This is the prior generation even from my older generation, but $50 is hard to beat, especially if anyone is just getting their first Kindle and isn't sure if they'll stick with it.

There are a many great products I have passed on because they included micro-USB. It's simply not worth dealing with anymore.
