This 4TB Lexar PLAY 2280 SE is a Costco exclusive PCIe 4.0 SSD aimed at PS5 and large game libraries, with a heatsink, 7,000 MB per second read speeds, and a 5 year warranty. The main appeal is the storage capacity and Costco return policy, which makes it feel low risk for buyers who need space now. The big caveat is that this SE version is the downgraded QLC, DRAMless model with an InnoGrit controller, so it is less attractive for heavy writes, video editing, or cache use. For mostly static game storage, it still looks like a practical fit.

  • Costco purchase terms may allow returns if the SSD fails, which can reduce risk for storage needs now.

  • The SE version is described as slightly slower than the regular PLAY model while still targeting console use cases.

  • The included heatsink can help manage heat during PS5 game downloads and sustained reads.

  • The drive can work without issues on a PS5 for large AAA game libraries.

  • The SE edition is described as QLC rather than TLC, which can hurt write performance for heavier workloads.

  • Some benchmarks and internal details raise concerns about mid random performance, HMB behavior, and heat under heavy loads.

  • The controller is described as the InnoGrit IG5236 with known firmware issues, which raises reliability concerns.

  • Return eligibility at Costco may be interpreted by the CSR, so "lifetime" returns are not guaranteed in practice.

he Lexar PLAY 2280 SE 4TB SSD (LNMPL8S004T-RNNNU) is a TLC-based SSD, PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 1.4, utilizing an InnoGrit IG5236CAA controller, Longsys 3D NAND flash, and HMB in a DRAM-less design

This isn't a good deal for $180 unless you are banking on the Costco returns. $180 is a pretty average price for a 4TB QLC drive these days; you can get much better YMTC Nand or a better controller for the same price.

Pros:
It's from Costco so in theory you can return it forever.
Very high 3200TBW for a QLC

Cons:
Controller is InnoGrit IG5236, which is a low end one from 2021 with known firmware issues. Either Lexar fixed it as this is a new product or this is never going to be patched. It's a PS5 marketed drive so the tech competency for the average buyer for this product is effectively negative -> review has 0 value.
Very low end Intel/Solidigm QLC
can you link to some other ~$180 4tb deals?

he just means its not a good deal "for himself". tbh for the speed and storage and reputation of seller this is a very low risk deal.

someone above sale this is a TLC SSD reviewed by thefpsreview; it's for sure a QLC drive and thefpsreview made a major mistake and really trashy for putting that out without confirmation, tells you a lot about their research skills and trustworthiness.

i think this is a great deal for someone that needs space today. or you can try to wait for the $230~250 TLC drives to come down in price.

if you have concern for QLC and heat, wait for Samsun Evo 990 to go on sale if you are not in a hurry.

Does it really matter it's QLC if that's used in PS5 console?

it doesnt matter if it's qlc,i have not seen any reports of thermal throttling. for most people you install it and forget it. this tlc vs qlc talk is kind of distracting. cause it comes down to the price and even qlc i dont see a better deal right now.

and we're in a cycle of memory and ssd going up, sodimm ddr5 is almost double what it was.

Would this be a good drive for a laptop running Windows 11? Or is it better suited for a PS5?

This isn't 'electronics'; there is the conventional defintion of electronics, under which everyone agrees this is electronics.

And there is what Costco would put in their policy. Under their policy, electronics are defined as: Televisions, Projectors, Major Appliances, Computers, Touchscreen Tablets, Smart Wearable Devices, Cameras, Aerial Cameras (drones), Camcorders, MP3 players and Cellular Phones.

Any computer hardware sold isn't part of the 90 days policy. Hypothetically if Costco sold graphic cards, it would have 'infinite return' as they aren't excluded. Costco also doesn't exclude video games/consoles which many people do abuse in terms of returns.
