This 4TB Lexar PLAY 2280 SE is a Costco exclusive PCIe 4.0 SSD aimed at PS5 and large game libraries, with a heatsink, 7,000 MB per second read speeds, and a 5 year warranty. The main appeal is the storage capacity and Costco return policy, which makes it feel low risk for buyers who need space now. The big caveat is that this SE version is the downgraded QLC, DRAMless model with an InnoGrit controller, so it is less attractive for heavy writes, video editing, or cache use. For mostly static game storage, it still looks like a practical fit.

For all my more technical friends, if I just need more space to store these 100gb AAA games and I have a budget of $200 for a 4tb drive, what else would you recommend instead of this one?
And would the other ones offer performance gains for ps5? Maybe for desktop usage but we're talking ps5 here.

This isn't a good deal for $180 unless you are banking on the Costco returns. $180 is a pretty average price for a 4TB QLC drive these days; you can get much better YMTC Nand or a better controller for the same price.

Pros:
It's from Costco so in theory you can return it forever.
Very high 3200TBW for a QLC

Cons:
Controller is InnoGrit IG5236, which is a low end one from 2021 with known firmware issues. Either Lexar fixed it as this is a new product or this is never going to be patched. It's a PS5 marketed drive so the tech competency for the average buyer for this product is effectively negative -> review has 0 value.
Very low end Intel/Solidigm QLC
For under $50 a TB? And most of these big drives are QLC. What planet are you living on? Lol calls this shoddy and return plagued but then counters with a CHINESE branded product like YMTC...

Computers and electronics aren't covered by that. They have a 90 day return policy.
Not this item tho. The item category must be explicitly mentioned in the 90 day return policy to be included in it. Ssd, monitors, game consoles... Are not included

In no world are 4 TB SSD so "big" that 4TB is mostly QLC. Completely backwards: many 4TB SSDs are TLC, in fact.
$50 / TB is not worth it for junk QLC. See the TLC-based Western Digital SN7100 for $210: $52.50 / TB vs your claimed $50 / TB. You won't pay 4% more for TLC? Bad move.
And the cherry on top for this nonsense comment: Lexar has been owned by China-based Longsys for almost a decade now. How did you not know that? Not unexpected from a commenter that capitalizes "Chinese" lmao.

Researched my own question:
This SSD is the Costco exclusive "SE" version of the normal PLAY model. It's a little slower and is QLC instead of TLC. If it were the normal TLC PLAY version, it would be almost identical to the M790, but that's not quite the case here as it's the downgraded QLC version.

Normal PLAY version review:

SE Edition review:

Thanks for pointing that out.
Was able to get the regular version couple months back for $180 on Amazon. Was initially bummed at seeing OP post as I would definitely prefer buying from Costco- but SE being a slightly downgraded version, not so bummed.

FYI here is another review of the regular TLC version from Tom's Hardware:

The Samsung 990 EVO Plus was on sale for $200 recently. The WD Black SN7100 is currently $210. I'd even take a WD QLC drive (like the SN5000) over this one (due to the Innogrit controller).

Has Lexar gotten better recently? My understanding is that they made unreliable memory but this was on a few SD cards and thumbdrives.

So you can buy this today and return it 5 years later when 4TB is less than $100?
Any justifiable cause that this can be done without feeling guilty?

This is a Costco exclusive. Found some more reviews and benchmarks

This is IMO an incredible value for 4tb at similar value to other drives priced at $220~250, and it's sold from Costco, with 5yr warranty included from Lexar.

I'm not sure about using it in a PS5 or Rog Ally or something cause the random write/read is mid and HMB.

Any heat issues are negated from the included heatsink IMO, but again it will run hot on heavy loads regardless cause of the controller version. But to be honest it's still way better than anything else in the same price range.

The 4TB Crucial T500 was $200 back in July on Amazon but only for a day before it sold out. It's Micron TLC, has DRAM, Phison E25 controller and 5 year warranty. I would expect it to hit $200 again around Black Friday/Cyber Monday.<br />

I doubt it. Everyone is saying that all storage media is facing shortages due to AI and are likely to rise in price for the foreseeable future rather than falling.

Any PC can have HMB support with the right drivers. Only the PS5 would suffer from lack of HMB.

You would be just fine. The real issue on QLC's is more of a write issue than a read issue, so if your files are gonna be pretty static (as in a AAA game which gets occasional updates), yeah, this is just fine.I wouldn't video edit or do mass file management or use it as some sort of cache drive.
