How do they verify student status?

I refuse to use the ID.me data miner.

FAQ says it uses a third party service called SheerID:

Hey thanks! Since the link is for Mac browser only I used this link below to sign up and verify my student account then downloaded the Perplexity AI app from the App Store and logged in. My Perplexity Pro sub was added.

I got this free from some paypal promo a few months back. I find it not nearly as good as chatgpt, idk perhaps i am just more used to chatgpt and biased...but i feel like it isn't as intuitive

It depends on your needs. I've had both for over a year, and use them a lot, for deep work involving topics to be researched for instance, perplexity is way ahead. Although chat gpt keeps closing that gap with each update.

As one example, there is a 4 hour youtube video lecture or podcast, with chat gpt voice i can only get very superficial info from it, not from the actual transcripts, mostly from probably the topic and researching the people involved to get very generic answers. But perplexity seems to extract transcripts and gives you an in-depth summary or you can ask exact things. I.e. in which lecture was this topic heavily criticized and in what context was it defended, what were the wordings....it will tell you, chatgpt says go to that episode and listen yourself for more detaill.
Or doing projects and deep research from social media and youtube and online forums sources and revealing those sources. I.e. reliability of Rivian based on online forums, or how much can i get this paddle used on ebay vs. A new one of an inferior brand etc. It accesses a lot of things. Again chatgpt keeps catching up.
Having both is a good option. Last night perplexity had an outtage , very uncommon, and i had to go to my chatgpt (it is plus) for some of my needs, I couldn't trust its depths so this morning i repeated everything with perplexity. Perplexity also has gpt5 and gpt5 thinking access in it. But not agent making or other things like Canva that come in handy especially for coding etc. which i dont use.

Correct me if I'm wrong since I only have experience with perplexity, but there is an option before you search that lets you choose which AI model you want to search with. So in theory wouldn't this include chatgpt, Gemini, Claude, etc?

For me, Perplexity has almost completely replaced google/ddg for search. I use ChatGPT for more brainstorming and approach generation.

Perplexity agents are interesting, but I'm running that sort of stuff with other tools.
