Is this cheaper than buying soda or is there another angle to it?

Its the same thing as Ink Jet Printers, they nail you on the CO2 tanks refill cost... Soda stream has an adapter you buy so you can connect a paint gun CO2 tank, BUT it's harder and near impossible to find someone to fill the tank, plus the the tank has to be replaced 3 year after the date stamped on the bottle or the places that do fill them won't ouch it. Dicks sporting good used to be every 2 years no mater what.

You really need to switch to a 20lb tank for it to start making sense financially. Got it down to about $1/refill now, but $150 or so to buy a secondhand tank, swap it and get the adapter to refill.

Avoid - eventually the tubes that push flavoring out will clog with syrup back flow.

This is the way. You can do the same with a soda stream. Plus buy a couple boxes of it your favorite soda syrup like what is used in restaurants. With the cost of sodas nowadays, it starts saving money within a few months dependant of your families soda intake.

Personally, I buy two liters of plain sparkling water, bottles of Bubly drops and don't deal with any of this. I'm guessing you can just add soda syrup as well, but I have yet to try that.
