Anyone have thoughts on the reliability and worthiness of the tradeoffs compared to the AD5X deal?

Think the biggest thing is do you want color or not? I believe the pro can do higher temp materials and is fully enclosed on the pro.

By color I presume you mean multi-color printing? You're absolutely right on the full enclosure, I saw some official mods to enclose the ad5x at only about $30 or so which interested me, but right out of the box is definitely nice to have.

Are you referring to the plastic and hardware for $30? You'll also need from what I've read 1.5kg of filament if you don't have any reprints to do the supports and extension mod so the ptfe tubes don't hit the lid.

I just got the AD5X this past week for $250 and stepson has had the 5m pro for about a year.

I'm just now diving deep into learning about 3d printers and went with the AD5X for a couple of reasons. $250 and multi was cheap enough for me to see if this is something I wanted to do. Long term plan is this will end up being a single color print with all the spools loaded with the same color so when one runs out during the print, it'll swap over and continue. It worked great last night.

I have the 'enclosure' kit coming from FF($44), have 2kg of petg for that print($22), ordered the camera and led ($51) as well so in total $117 and still need to add a fan and two hepa filters.

Take that into consideration if you're going to want to enclose it.

Also look up how much 'waste' any multicolor printer makes that has one tool head.

The 5m pro has been very reliable printing pla. A couple issues due to user error/learning curve but YT videos helped disassemble the nozzle assembly.

If you're going to print something requiring an enclosure like asa/abs, this is what I'd go with.

If you want to do multicolor or use a set up that will continue a print when a spool runs out and you don't have to be there, AD5X for budget or look into the tool changers coming out like the snapmaker u1 or three another one coming with a 12 changer.

feels like its too expensive for what it is. This is just the non pro 5M with an enclosure, camera and 2 extra nozzle for an extra $100.

It's not really too expensive, try adding those things on to the base and you'll come out cheaper buying the pro. Also the enclosure is very well designed, and has an active filter in it.
If you don't WANT an enclosure, great, don't buy it, but if you want an enclosed printer you're way better off getting the pro out of the gate.

I bought the 5M about 1.5 years back. I would have been happy to get the pro for $100 more. I probably spent $40 to create the enclosure (mostly to keep dust off when not printing). So that's $40 to the $100 difference. Of course the Pro's enclosure is nicer and I would like the front mounted power button. Some didn't like it since it's a soft switch and if you use a smart outlet to power the printer up you still need to push the power button. Not an issue for me.

The camera may be nice but I don't have my printer networked. The extra cooling fan and the air filtration would be nice. Same with the extra nozzles (different sizes, not just spares). Not that I'm going to question anyone who saves the money and gets a 5M. It's a great printer and now a heck of a great deal.

Consider the CC for an enclosure. Sites have CB. No sales tax. Current promo going on. Brings it nearly inline with 5m pro. Bigger build plate..newer unit

however the FF are tried and tested units

those of us with problematic cc's will disagree. plenty of issues and very few solutions. can't get a refund and no one want them used except for parts. snapmaker is a company built on overpromising and underdelivering so i'd hold off on the u1 for at least a year as the only positive info coming out on them are from brand shills and even some of those have turned against the product. as much as it pains me to say it with tech - sometimes the tried and true models are the best choices
