I have a laggy echo that shows the ring camera when it detects movement. Can this Google thing also do that cus the echo is extremely slow and I can't stand it

I listened to a podcast that had Anish Katukaran (chief product officer of google home) where he talked about how difficult it was to upgrade both new and old hardware to the new Gemini for home that they're pushing out. He stated something along the lines of, in doing that, it should show that they aren't dropping the home line and are committed to it. His words not mine. Made me hopeful that my ancient minis will be more useful soon

I've had the original, gen1, before it took the Nest name, and it's still going strong years later. Even got an update recently. Well worth the $50 if you ask me. But you didn't. But still a good deal at $50 😂

I've had the larger version of this for a few years and am really happy with it. I wouldn't pay more than $100-ish for the larger version, and I think $50 is a great price for the 7" version. The speakers on mine are actually pretty decent, at least compared to a bluetooth speaker or the little hockey puck ones I still have. Don't expect high-end sound.
But it's perfect to play music while cooking with a nice big display for any timers I have running, or to put on sports when watching the game conflicts with my need to feed myself. When I'm not using it, it functions as a really nice photo frame. I don't use any of the features like a morning routine, reminders, etc. But still highly satisfied.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the google nest hubs and have no experience with smart display products. Would this be a good gift for an older person who is not too techy? What are the practical things they could do with this?

It's a good photo frame, but I would not use it for smart features like home automation (turning on and of lights, etc.).

this product is entirely useless. I am a HUGE Google fan but its assistant is absolutely horrific. This thing seems worse than it was at launch and has no purpose other than showing pictures.

Dont bother.

Glorified e-waste. Have 2 first gen units and both are suffer from that dreaded dying screen issue. The screen on my fiancée's bedside Home Hub already died years ago and the other one in our kitchen is starting to now. I don't know how the second gen fares, but I'll never be buying these at full or half price (on top of the fact that it's performance has been trash for the last several years as others have commented).

this... people who buy them... especially repeat buyers are most likely using them as YouTube devices or speakers because they know that for 50 dollars its hard to beat such a compatible and well sounding device for such a need

But still, Google is one of the least reliable tech companies there is as far as being able to depend on any kind of long term support for the products they sell. It's very much a "thing" with them.

the end of guaranteed support on these is march 2026. thats not saying support will definitely end then, but google is then no longer obligated to support it. and with googles track record, i would expect maybe another yearish? personally, im going to wait to see how things unfold till i get anymore devices.
