Google Fi's 50 percent off promo is mainly attractive for low monthly pricing on multiple lines, especially when paired with strong T Mobile based service and easy eSIM activation through the Fi app. The plan can work well on iPhone and Android, and some setups report smooth porting and solid speeds. The main catches are that Unlimited Essentials has no hotspot tethering in the support docs, data slows hard after the allotment, and promo eligibility can be finicky with invite timing, line transfers, and new customer rules. Taxes, fees, and international data costs can also change the value quickly.
Common Questions (5)
The promo can apply to multiple lines, but each invited user must accept the invite before the promotion deadline. If a line is not accepted in time, that line may miss the discount even if the order was placed before the cutoff.
Yes, you can swap the SIM, but newer phones often use eSIM, so the Google Fi app may need to transfer the line to eSIM instead. If the phone was previously configured for another carrier, a factory reset or network reset can help it configure correctly.
A new Fi customer is someone who has never had Fi service or whose last day of Fi service was more than 180 days before the purchase. The phone number also appears to need to be off Google Fi for about 6 months before it is treated as new.
Unlimited Essentials has no hotspot tethering capability, so you cannot use your phone as a hotspot on that plan. A later comment says hotspot tethering was added about a month ago, so the feature may now be present but not clearly disclosed in the plan details.
Sign up for the plan first, then use the Google Fi Android or iOS app to finish eSIM setup. Android is described as seamless, while iPhone setup requires switching between the Fi app and iOS Settings to complete activation.

On my initial order for the 2 lines on Sept 18 both lines were verified by Fi support as qualified for the the 50% discount on each line, back then.
Hope to get it resolved by Fi support within the next day or two, max. Hoping, anyway.
The porting was very easy once TM was convinced they could not entice us to stay and gave us the 'port-out' PINs.
My wife and I have older Samsung S9+ phones with Android 10 that were previously on T-Mobile. For us, despite being told 'yes' in the app itself, there was never any TM-style Visual Voice Mail (one of the great benefits for TM (when it works)).
Then this week I get an email that says that in a week they will no longer support Wi-Fi calling on our phones because they're 'too old' and don't support Android 11. We have no cell service from anyone at our house, and Wi-Fi calling/texting is the only way the phones work. I've been on the plan about 30 days.
The email was very unclear, and I'm not certain whether the voicemail-to-text feature will continue working. I guess we'll see in a week.
We are retired on a fixed income and cannot currently afford to buy two new (or even used) phones.
I don't have any idea what I'm going to do, but be aware that the terms Google-Fi give you can change in a heartbeat, and for some reason never to your benefit.
If Wi-Fi calling and texting disappears along with voicemail to text also gone, I'm going to cancel the plan as soon as I find another cell company that supports the phones.

To order two lines, should I first order mine and invite the other users email to be eligible for the promotion? Will the 50% promo will be applied to the other user as well?
