Google Fi's 50 percent off promo is mainly attractive for low monthly pricing on multiple lines, especially when paired with strong T Mobile based service and easy eSIM activation through the Fi app. The plan can work well on iPhone and Android, and some setups report smooth porting and solid speeds. The main catches are that Unlimited Essentials has no hotspot tethering in the support docs, data slows hard after the allotment, and promo eligibility can be finicky with invite timing, line transfers, and new customer rules. Taxes, fees, and international data costs can also change the value quickly.
Fi's eSIM setup can be seamless on Android using the Fi apps' guided flow.
Fi can provide priority data on T-Mobile's network, which may help during congestion.
Fi can work well for multi-line setups when promo invites are accepted before the promo ends.
Fi can support iPhone eSIM transfers by using the Fi app to move the line.
Unlimited Essentials can lack hotspot tethering capability, which can prevent using phone hotspot on the cheapest plan.
Hotspot performance can become unusable after data allotment slows down, especially for VPN use.
Promo pricing can fail to apply correctly for multi-line orders, including cases where only one line receives the discount.
Fi can discontinue Wi‑Fi calling support on older Android versions, which can disrupt service at home.

message me if you have any questions i use FI a lot.
Edit: Checking around on reddit, it seems like its doable to port out and back in, as long as the email (gmail) used to sign up is different. Neat.
The porting was very easy once TM was convinced they could not entice us to stay and gave us the 'port-out' PINs.
My wife and I have older Samsung S9+ phones with Android 10 that were previously on T-Mobile. For us, despite being told 'yes' in the app itself, there was never any TM-style Visual Voice Mail (one of the great benefits for TM (when it works)).
Then this week I get an email that says that in a week they will no longer support Wi-Fi calling on our phones because they're 'too old' and don't support Android 11. We have no cell service from anyone at our house, and Wi-Fi calling/texting is the only way the phones work. I've been on the plan about 30 days.
The email was very unclear, and I'm not certain whether the voicemail-to-text feature will continue working. I guess we'll see in a week.
We are retired on a fixed income and cannot currently afford to buy two new (or even used) phones.
I don't have any idea what I'm going to do, but be aware that the terms Google-Fi give you can change in a heartbeat, and for some reason never to your benefit.
If Wi-Fi calling and texting disappears along with voicemail to text also gone, I'm going to cancel the plan as soon as I find another cell company that supports the phones.

I have the 15 month half price plan on two phones (one month in). Can I just stick the old SIM from my current S9 phones into the S22 phones I buy and go on with my life, or is there some kind of drama that needs to be dealt with?
Thanks.

but the newphones have esim. so use the google fi app and it will transfer the line to the esim.
EDITED TO FIX ANDROID LEVEL - IT'S ANYTHING BELOW 11, NOT BELOW 10.

The rep had verified I would be getting the discount on BOTH lines, yet he blatantly omitted saying I had to accept the invite and log in on the 2nd line before that previous Sept 18 9:59 AM PST deadline (which was within the hour). He also knew I wouldn't even be receiving my 2 SIM cards (phones not eSIM compat) until Sept 23, 5 days later.
So now I received the discount only on the 1st line, but not the 2nd and will now cancel that line.
Connectivity via the hotspot has been the pits and totally useless when trying to use a VPN (which Goggle warns about in their docs). No issues at all when I switch to my other ISP's hotspot connection.

He told me all that I had to do to get the promo on both lines was activate both lines before 30 days. He omitted the 'accept invitation within that hour' part. Makes no sense to have to "accept an invitation" when I am the one ordering TWO lines and order was completed.
