I thought you would still receive motion activated notifications on your phone via the app without a subscription, it just wouldn't start auto recording.

motion activated yes, but person detection is paywalled. I had this set up at my front door looking out, would receive a notification everytime the wind blew the bushes. Switched to eufy, no more paywalls
