I went the extra step of covering the outer shell with water proofing spray (the industrial stuff - not scotch guard.)
I'm on year 4 with these and they have shockingly held up.
My only disappointment is with the heating - it doesn't get as warm as I feel it should get but then again the bottom is covered in thick warm material that probably gets plenty warm when a heated animal is laying on it.
Well worth the $25 investment (not worth the $65).

Our 2 have the sturdy plastic flaps covering the openings on both ends. The cat can push with their head to get in or out easily.
