I have 2 of these (the heated ones) and they do stay dry and are insulated. I was pretty skeptical of these originally once I got them out of the box to assemble. I was the same way - 'what is this junk?' These are surprisingly sturdy, stable and have a weather resistant outer material (and pretty thick - 1/2 or 3/4.)
I went the extra step of covering the outer shell with water proofing spray (the industrial stuff - not scotch guard.)
I'm on year 4 with these and they have shockingly held up.
My only disappointment is with the heating - it doesn't get as warm as I feel it should get but then again the bottom is covered in thick warm material that probably gets plenty warm when a heated animal is laying on it.

Guess you can't read...it says weather resistant. I didn't see anything saying water or weather proof. There is a difference, bud.

We had several of these house the neighborhood cats for years.

Well worth the $25 investment (not worth the $65).

I've seen people make cat houses out of plastic bins insulated with straw. Would those be better insulated and warmer than this?

Haven't had a bad product yet from this manufacturer. Among other products, have had one of their heated outdoor houses and the thing is built great.

It's not open design. It has: "The K&H Outdoor Kitty House features two exits with removable plastic flaps so pets cannot be trapped by predators and yet still have sufficient protection."
Our 2 have the sturdy plastic flaps covering the openings on both ends. The cat can push with their head to get in or out easily.
