You're better off buying a used studio or tribute. These are as barebones as they've made in the last 10 years.

I got mine in Inverness Green for $799 at Guitar Center about a year ago on what seemed like clearance pricing. I'm not sure on the value of $1,049, stuff has increased in price in the last year though. Probably still the cheapest new US made guitar you'll find currently. I do enjoy the sound of the 490R/498T combo and like the thinner, more comfortable body style. The pickups are standard humbuckers and could be swapped.

Nice review. But I'm sure you'll agree that it is better to own a great foreign made guitar than a shitty American-made one, like this one.

In most cases, yeah. The Modern Lite is my only American made guitar though. I knew it was discounted because it wasn't well received. I was paying a bit for Gibson to be on the headstock rather than Epiphone, not as much as usual though. While the features are barebones, I like the feel and sound. At the lower price, I didn't mind swapping for locking tuners and matching black hardware. The thinner more contoured body style was a big selling point for me as well. I traded my Gretsch 2215-P90 that I got for $200 rather than $400 because the traditional single-cut Les Paul body style wasn't all that comfortable for me.
For someone that knows they want this guitar or something like it, this could still be a slick deal.

Or a used quality American one...lol.

I bought a Jackson SLA3Q (china) last year (thanks, SD!). I was completely blown away. I started shopping for an American Soloist and I think the great foreign one I have blows away the American ones. Features, sound, and playability. Ugh. Cured that GAS real quick playing the USA ones in store...

Looks backordered now, and the TV Wheat color is same price, also backordered. Rose Gold is same price, in stock.
I also got an Inverness Green one for $799 at GC a year or so ago. Worth every penny of that. Good build quality, but it is stripped down in features. No maple top, thin body, satin finish, no binding etc. It's kind of like a LP shaped SG Studio. Not sure $1049 is really worth it, but at least it's getting close to the 899 or so they should be selling for.
