I just used a Lenovo Slim 7i for a few days and Windows just doesn't seem great on laptops. I spent like a couple of days just trying to get rid of the bloat and messing with settings just so I could try and get the same battery life all the reviewers said it should have. The speakers were also not great.

I feel like Apple is overcharging people with their storage options and pricing. The 256gb version is sometimes $799, but for $200 more 512gb version is supposed to be a deal? Pretty disappointing to me.

The M4 MacBook Air stands out as a thin, premium laptop with strong battery life, a good screen, a nicer webcam, and support for two external displays plus the built in display without a DisplayLink dock. The M series is also described as staying smooth for years, with one M1 Air still running well after four years and holding 7 plus hours of battery life. The main knock is Apple's storage pricing, since the jump from 256GB to 512GB is seen as steep at $200. That makes the 512GB model feel more like a convenience upgrade than a clear value play.

Common Questions (4)

  • The M4 Air is pricier, but it offers Apple's build quality, strong battery life, and a polished laptop experience. Snapdragon and Lunar Lake machines can be competitive on price and battery, but Windows setup, bloat, and speakers can be drawbacks depending on the model.

  • The 512GB jump is a $200 premium over the 256GB model, and Apple's storage pricing is widely viewed as steep. If you need the space, it avoids relying on external storage; if not, the upgrade is poor value compared with buying storage separately.

  • For web browsing and media, the difference is small, but the M4 adds a nicer webcam and slightly better real-world battery life. If you need those extras or two external displays, the M4 has clear advantages; otherwise the M3 can feel very similar.

  • Yes. The M4 MacBook Air can drive two external displays plus its built-in screen without a DisplayLink dock, which is useful if you want a multi-monitor setup without extra adapters.

Thanks! I was able to go to Micro Center and get them to price match. They even let me choose a different color.

There's another post for another vendor having the 1TB version for the same price.

That link is for a refurb with 90-day warranty only. Not the same thing.

Looks like you're right. Didn't know "recon" was another term for refurbished.

It's crazy that Apple laptops are the best values now. I remember in college buying some big clunky MacBook with a core 2 duo for a lot more than this

Why? Besides the 'AI' stuff. They seem to be marginally different.

Idk about best value. The snapdragon and intel Lunar lake stuff it decently competitive at half the price.

The M4 ones have a nicer webcam if that matters to you. And battery life supposed to be slightly better than the M3 in real life use. Having tried an M3 before getting this M4, if you're just browsing the web or watching media, I didn't think there's a huge difference.

It's because apple's own powerpc processors (m1) are all the rage now. They used to be too weak to compete with intel. M processors are cheaper to make and rest of the laptops became cheaper as well- thanks to Asian countries.
