Not new. The Luxury Direct, GreenToe and Boderry have all been around for 5+ years. Most watch collectors (like me) have known about them for years. Great way to buy way below retail and sell later and make money or not lose money. Thought it was time to share the secret on SD.

PurchaseDirect is another one. Great place to buy Oris. Botach for Seiko.

Thanks for the info. I will keep these in mind. Do they give manufacturer warranty? Or just seller warranty like Jomashop?I saw watchmaxx in some other post?

Yes, full factory warranty, although I've never needed a warranty.

Since you're a collector, what are some must have watches for someone who is starting? My budget is low .

I'm not really one to ask. I buy watches that speak to me. I have over 400 so apparently they speak to me a lot. Some high end stuff, some micro brands, lots of vintage seiko, bulova, Timex, darwil and more. You used to be able to buy HMT's from India for $5. I was buying them 10 at a time. Equally great deals for 70' s era Seiko's from the Philippines for $50 apiece, with regulated movements, custom hand sets, new crystals, etc.

It can get pretty crazy when you start chasing limited editions and at 100+ storage becomes an issue.

I am new to the game but wanted to point out that this is a hard question to answer. Are you looking for something that is fancy? Functional? Can take a beating? Lasting? There are different answers based on what you want out of a watch and your budget.

Start with the basics and pinpoint if you want a quartz watch or a mechanical watch (or both I guess)

Quartz usually has a battery or some sort of solar charging and keeps time accurately to within seconds per year. They do not require maintenance and the movement inside of them lasts a long time. Quartz can come in digital display or analog flavors (so LCD screen or just watch hands basically).

Mechanical does not rely on any electricity and has an automatic winding and manual winding function (some older watches might be automatic only or manual winding only). Automatic means that the watch is wound by your hand movements over the day (typing, walking, washing your hands, swinging your arms, you name it). Most mid-line mechanical watches have a power reserve of ~40 hours, so basically one weekends worth of power without any movement/winding.

The caveat to quartz watches is that you are reliant on either a battery to replace every few years or need to make sure the watch gets some sort of sunlight every so often for the solar models. The caveat to mechanical watches is that they will not be as accurate as a quartz, but they can get close depending on how high end the model is and how much you want to mess with the regulation.

The other downside for mechanical watches is that they need a service every 3-7 years. That range is wide because every manufacturer has a different recommendation. Servicing consists of having the watch parts professionally cleaned of old dried-up lubrication and fresh lubrication added. Servicing a watch can range widely based on manufacturer and as an example, the movement like the above SRPG35 watch (4R36) costs $176 to service directly from Seiko. Though I am sure you can find local watchmakers who can do it cheaper, or you can replace the movement with something from AliExpress for like ~40 dollars. However, in the end, this can all vary depending on how often you use the watch.

I am a bit of a Seiko fanboy. I think if you wanted to start looking at mechanical watches, the SRPG35 watch in this deal is a great start because it has a proven movement (the 4R36), It's easy to read because it has Arabic numeral numbers, has standard manual/automatic winding, quick date change, hacking (stops it from ticking so you can set the time accurately), and Seiko's 'Lumi Bright' paint for readability in the dark. It is a field watch which is meant to take a bit of a beating and still be functional. If that is out of your budget, you can find previously owned versions of its predecessor, the SNK8** series (like the SNK805) for around $100-150 on Reddit/eBay. Be warned though, those watches are automatic only and have no hacking, which means you cannot wind them manually or set them accurate to the second (if that matters to you).

It is a rabbit hole. Just be careful from buying on eBay without looking up some basic ways to spot counterfeits. I started on reddit's 'WatchExchange' subreddit which has hefty rules to prevent scammers.

Watch some YouTube videos, maybe go find a store to try on some watches, and most importantly, echoing @cvp33 a bit... find a watch that speaks to you that you would enjoy wearing.

Oh, and if you have a Costco membership, they sell the Seiko SRPD93 for $189 before tax and it's a fantastic 'first watch' if you dig its look.

Anyone with any recommendations on where to find reasonably priced Hamilton's? I'm specifically looking for a Ventura but I've been eye balling a few others.

Timex, Casio and seiko. I started with Seiko and then did the whole modding seiko stuff. Went down the rabbit hole, use to own 8 rolex (not alll at the same time). Sold all my rolex and now have around 30 watches. Some are inexpensive but I love them all! I still love rolex but only older models and not the newer bling blings.

If you want an entry level swiss watch, I'll say a Tudor. And if you're a serious collector..must have a speedy moonwatch haha

Dont trust any youtubers as they hype up trends and reviews. But they are good for observational purposes. Also I use to dislike smaller watches but after 4-5 years into the hobby, I find that 37-39mm are my sweet spot for a 6.6" wrist. Also sometimes a watch will need a strap/bracelet that really fits that style of watch, it really changes the whole look!

Not 5 years ago...but the old badged Seiko 5 field watches were $55 at one time. IIRC like 10 years or so.
