someone tell me why this is a good or bad deal (non backlit keyboard aside). Guess it's sorta heavy and battery undersized?

Battery is definitely not undersized and is actually bigger than most of the other 16" options you'd find around this price.

70 WHr on a Ryzen 5, it's probably good all day. Also barely above 4 lb.

This vs the HP omnibook from Staples tho? See this one has windows Hello compatible cam but the HP has a better CPU and backlit keyboard. At the same time the last time I touched a HP it wasn't positive. But I also know it's not the company it was from the past.

I have a similar history with HP as well but I got the Omnibook deal when it was posted. I considered canceling and switching to this but ultimately stayed with the backlit keyboard and bigger SSD on the HP. It's supposed to arrive today; I can add my first impressions here once I play with it a bit.

Shitty display panel (45% NTSC means inaccurate colors)
Underpowered CPU (compared to other modern options. It's not unusable, just weak for 500 USD)
Not enough ram for a DDR5 system (although easily fixable if the 16 is all in the soldered slot. DDR5 8gig sticks tend to be worse in every way compared to 16 gig sticks, due to the way it's designed)
Only 5Gbps USB ports (at least one 10Gbps is common today, and 20 or even 40Gbps is possible on pricier models. May not be a problem for most people, but it'll be really annoying if you actually need it)

Appreciate it. Not super high demands bc it's for the in laws but ended up going with the HP. The 340 seems to be a significant step up from the 330.

The integrated Radeon 890M iGPU can do real gaming. Highly recommend upgrading to 32GB.

This does not have the 890M GPU. This has a 4 core CPU and 2 CU Radeon 820M GPU. This is in no way a gaming computer.
