Damn. So tempting. Hopefully the 5900xt goes back to $200 again.

With the price of DDR4 through the roof now this seems like a pretty good deal.

I would recommend a Ryzen 5 5600 at a minimum. You're going to be spending well over $100 if you buy new, but might be able to pick up something used for around $100. Keep in mind a couple of things. A new one will typically come with the stock cooler which works fine on this CPU. These have no integrated graphics so you would have to also purchase a GPU which you may have planned on already. If you don't require the extra horsepower of a discrete GPU then look for a Ryzen 5 5600G which would be fine for everyday computing but not for gaming.

5700X3D was the best option. Now-days, a 5800XT or 5900XT(budget workstation) would be about the best option.
AM4 is a lot cheaper to 'get into' but, it is an aging platform. AM5 does reward the investment, over AM4.

Agreed! 5800XT a few months ago was falling $10 every week, if I remember it got down to $129 new on Newegg and Amazon and with the wraith cooler.nod

Either something that sips electricity, or something with lots of cores.

It depends on what your purpose is with purchasing this mobo

5800xt is excellent even now with am4 being old (though not completely dead). about half my office is deployed with a 5800xt b550 combo because of how good pricing was.

fwiw my workstation system is still a 5950x and nvlink rtx cards since it still renders everything i need like a champ and doesn't self immolate like the 14900k's were doing. eventually i'll move up to a 9950x but for now i have no need as the 5000 series were really good.

I just ordered an ASRock B550 WIFI board on Amazon for $79 a couple of days ago since it was the cheapest ATX B550 WIFI board I could find, but if I didn't already have a 32Gb kit of ddr4 that I bought earlier, I'd definitely cancel that ASRock board and buy this instead, esp. since I hate Polychrome Sync with a passion, and also because DDR4 prices have become completely out of control all of a sudden, basically doubling in price within a week or so, same as DDR5

if you get this keep an eye on cache of the cpu you buy, any G part is very bad for gaming, along with the 5500 because it has i think half of what normal chips have.
