At least as of a few years ago, this strategy didn't seem to work at Sam's either. Though Sam's customer service got so bad that I gave up on them anyways, wasn't worth the hassle for occasional decent deals.

Find a third adult living in your house, they can open it even while your current membership is still active, and then they can add you as the +1 once yours expires

I signed up for an Executive early this year and rep told me that they will send the $40 card via mail. I never got one and had to downgrade to Gold.
