I prefer models with replaceable batteries. I have several of this $20 First Alert from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...X0DER&th=1

Kidde has turned to crap. They filed for chapter 11 in 2023. I'm in the process of moving to first alert since costco had a sale on them recently. Also the reviews for first alert seem to be just as terrible so we're just all hosed and going to all get smoked out of our homes or live with constant false alarms

first alert from Costco is crap too. The 10 years battery one never really last that long. it usually die within 3-5 years at most. Good thing is that the warranty covers it.

My first alert recently started beeping at 2am. I did not hesitate to call 911

That one and this one are both plug in, so batteries shouldn't be a factor.

The bankruptcy had to do with lawsuits related to their firefighting foam, which contained pfas. https://www.reuters.com/legal/fir...%20Reuters

A decade ago when they first started carrying those, I replaced a bunch of them in family member's homes, and some of them didn't even last a year before going off randomly. Returned them all, and the next batch barely made it 2-3 years. Tried them again about five years ago and they lasted a little over 3 years. Wouldn't touch anything made by those asshats with a ten foot pole again.

Do these work reliably on battery? For example, can I bring this to an off grid cabin for a few days and have it run on battery power?
