My guess it to try and attract people buying the various black METAL garage cabinets into buying these and not realizing they are plastic.

And also to get the people who would like metal garage cabinets but want cheaper.

40lbs max capacity for each shelf is not much, especially if this is for garage use.

I have the old beige ones of these. Ended up having to cut conduit and slide it into the square channel that exists under these shelves. Strengthens and adds support but I did discover the weak point shifting from sag to ripping off the where it attaches to the side, which is unfixable. I probably had 70 lbs on the shelf where this happened on a hot day when the plastic was weaker.So these are fine but don't expect to put heavy things (>40lbs per shelf) inside long term.
