Never dare to buy NAS from Chinese brands or QNAP.

I held off on replacing my 8 bay and grabbed one when they finally caved.

Synology DS225+ NAS Review – Verdict and Conclusion
The Synology DS225+ delivers a polished and well-integrated NAS experience that caters to home users and small teams looking for dependable data storage, backups, and light multimedia handling. Its compact form factor, efficient thermal and acoustic design, and access to the full DSM 7.2 ecosystem make it a compelling choice for those who prioritize low noise, low power use, and a robust software suite. The inclusion of 2.5GbE networking, integrated graphics for basic Plex or Jellyfin transcoding, and support for Btrfs, SHR, and snapshot replication ensure that it remains practical for a wide range of core NAS tasks. It's a system that "just works," and for many users, that is enough to justify its place on their shortlist.
However, the DS225+ is increasingly defined by its limitations as much as its strengths. The use of an aging processor, restricted memory expansion, limited I/O, and locked-down drive compatibility significantly reduce its appeal for users who expect flexibility, performance headroom, or long-term scalability. When positioned against similarly priced or even cheaper NAS solutions from competing brands—many of which offer newer CPUs, broader third-party drive support, and better external connectivity—the DS225+ risks feeling outdated straight out of the box. Synology's evolving product strategy also casts doubt on the long-term direction for devices like this. For users who are already committed to the Synology ecosystem or need something simple and quiet for basic NAS duties, the DS225+ can still be a solid purchase. For those looking for open-ended expandability or stronger hardware per dollar, however, it's worth comparing alternatives or waiting to see how Synology's next generation unfolds.

I went with the Terramaster unit. Better hardware all around. You'd be hard pressed to build a similar unit for less. Going to load Unraid on it.
Nice review here: https://nascompares.com/review/te...as-review/
Synology can pound sand with their proprietary HDD garbage. Sure they reversed course but they tipped their hand.

there are a number of people on slickdeals that own NAS's. So hopefully others can share their experience. You are new to NAS world, as you state, ... what I did was watch lots of YOUTUBE videos of current models and comparing them and reviewing them.
Your 300 dollar is for NAS is just the beginning, you also have to buy high grade hard drives that can endure the 24/7 of use. So you got to add that cost to your project.
Sounds like you are NOT A BUSINESS ... you are home user, so that helps you in deciding what your needs are.
I own 2 NAS's I finally unplugged a week ago. It was too slow for me, and I no longer felt comfortable keeping my MECH Hardrives on 24/7 with wear and tear.
My current situation is DAS or external hard drives for DATA STORAGE ... I currently own 4 4-bay DAS'S (cost around 100 dollars each) on sale, and they are filled with 14 TB WD exterprise drives! Also have 5 TB WD portables and just got Seagate 26 TB external drives. I'm armed to the teeth!
So, been doing this for a number of years, fun hobby!
All my mech hardrives are off 99.9 percent of the time for me and for backup/transfer to FASTER MEDIA. I have ONE main PC, with a couple of 4 TB NVMe/SSD's in them for STORAGE, (currently what I want to watch or share on my network. I use PLEX server on my MAIN PC to serve my devices in home. It is faster than a very old celeron chip in this 2 bay NAS in this thread.
What ever you do, follow the 3-2-1 back guide. 3 copies of your important MEDIA/DATA. So if one device crashes and burns, you have 2 other copies. Be Safe.
As for my advice, check on Youtube, and take some time to ENJOY the research. The NAS in this thread, as the reviewer wrote, is already OUT-DATED before it was released a few month back. Newbies will buy it and regret it once they learn more. Now it could be great learning experience for world of NAS, so ... research the latest reviews to get current advice and pro/con issues.
