A lot of negative comments in this thread. How about a regular family of 5 can actually have a decent Thanksgiving for only $40.

Some of you need to think of it like that. A lot of families are just trying to get by with food on the table and this is a way for them to have a nice holiday meal together.

Not everyone is trying to feed 10-20 people. Just some "food" for thought.

To estimate you typically say 1lb per person so it feeds 14 and that takes all the waste into consideration. Most people eat 8oz or less if you actually keep track.

Most of a 14 pound turkey is waste. You don't get anywhere near 14 pounds of meat off it.

How is this comment ranking? It's a good thing that that animal was an animal and not grown in a lab...it's low-cost food, and you're going to complain that the turkey is not huge enough? Go find a real breed that can run around and not die of a heart attack at 4 months old, and tell me how much meat you get off of it! Get a second bird already for your Aldi feast..

it's how cooking works. fat renders out, people don't eat bones. use the carcass to make turkey stock.

I don't see how a 14 lbs turkey and these sides are going to fill everyone up especially with all the vegetarians I'm feeding.

LOL Yes, so many variables as well--Marcia's fasting today, Calvin is on keto, Junior's going vegetarian. It's an ad, but I do like it bc these lists are so simple. Even if someone doesn't want those exact items, it helps give a ballpark budget and spark ideas. Not sure if they're still doing it, but Walmart and other stores used to have a paper shopping list of all the holiday goodies and the corresponding aisles. I liked those bc they sometimes had recipes and usually reminded me to grab some random "necessity" like Cool Whip. The Butterball hotline opens Nov. 3rd if anyone needs to talk out their serving portions and how to proceed. when it comes to turkey. 1-800- BUTTERBALL

Not seeing how a 14 lb turkey realistically feeds 10, especially if some people don't eat dark meat.
add an $5 costco chicken, your welcome

$40 gets you 24 lb of costco chicken for the meat lovers

Ok, well the only white is basically the breast so you're screwed. Also, your most people don't understand what tastes good, the best tasting are the legs and wings. White meat needs gravy for any flavor. Fat=flavor. Maybe one day you'll figure that out.
Then Mister, you've been eating the wrong kind of turkey...

Aldi is awfully good most of the time. They're our goto, and always have decent prices.

Is the Turkey cooked or raw?
Raw, because that is a package for people cooking. All of it has to be cooked. Very traditional, though. Just remember, if you are preparing a frozen 14 pound turkey it has to be defrosted in the refrigerator three days before.

About 2 years ago I stopped trying to make the perfect "Norman Rockwell" whole turkey for the presentation no one even cares about anymore. I now break the whole bird down the night before when it's raw, season and cook it that way. It cooks faster overall. you can cook the breast separate from the dark meat since they are done at different temps and times anyway. when it's all cooked it's much easier to cut and serve since you already did the bone work the night before. Watch this video for how to do it. Its a game changer - made even better if you butcher tie the two breasts together to make a "roast". Try it, you'll thank me - juicy, less work, less stress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8X4cqBF_l0&t=2s

I don't think they base serving estimates on how picky the people are.
I can't stand dry, flavorless, useless white meat. Bring the dark meat on!

I'm (mostly) in agreement with you re:white meat except for the useless part. Leftover white meat on a turkey sandwich with copious amounts of mayo is awesome.

Lots of rules of thumb here.

For example some sites say to budget 1-1.5 lb of turkey per person, but that accounts for wastage (bones, skin, cartilage, etc) but if you're using carved breast, plan on 0.5-0.75 lb/person, so again roughly half of the bird is waste

Other sites say that for every lb of meat there's roughly 1/2-1/3 lb of wastage. Lastly "40-50% edible meat by weight".

So it's probably safe to budget that around half of a 14 lb turkey will be edible, or ~ 7 lb but for 10 people that's 0.7 lb/person which looks to be in the range above.

Lastly, a "meal" like this is more about bulk than protein. It's a cheap meal.
