Nothing is free... forever. Whats their angle here?
You do have to have a Canva account. Which I guess is also free to setup.
The AI tools are only available if you pay for a Canva Premium account.

Wonder how the compared to Affiinity Designer 2. Was looking to upgraded on Black Friday if they have a sale.

Free sounds too good to be true.

I've been active on Canva since 2016. Close to when they started. Made 100+ projects at this point on their site. Cloud storage and project storage are genuinely free but agree good things don't last forever and I worry the direction they heard especially if bought out by Adobe, Google, or Microsoft. Just a scary trend in the industry but if somehow Canva can keep this up I'm all for it. The few times I contacted them in their early years got in touch with their executive team in Australia and they were a great company. With size things change though as we know

They're not selling the previous versions anymore so you don't have much of a choice in the upgrade department.

Are you suggesting a corporation would lie to us?

Not necessarily. A lot of these graphics tools aren't ground-breaking anymore and open-source & free competitors already exist (GIMP, etc).

Plus, AFFINITY wasn't really profitable selling their software or anything.

I think a graphics AI company like CANVA really just needs freeware to onboard graphics users. And as long as ADOBE is hella expensive for most people who expect to pay $20/month for AI, not $60/mo for a design suite FOREVER ---- and yet ADOBE ALSO offers AI upgrades ---- then AFFINITY represents a good opportunity for CANVA to skim some users away from ADOBE while still offering effectively similar AI upgrades and upsells.

Most of ADOBES key benefits are really in the intelligence of its software. The bones of Photoshop etc arent really important, but they are all some users need. And they are all that new users and students look for.

This means that AFFINITY is a gateway to CANVA services.

Its actually a beautiful relationship. Its not like CANVA isn't profitable. Therefore, it can easily service AFFINITY updates (which lets face it, even Photoshop is basically the same from 20 years ago). While offering advanced functions for a price (which so does Adobe, in the form of credits for purchase).

I strongly appreciate CANVA/AFFINITY's model bc it gives the user a choice to buy AI use.

Whereas ADOBE Photoshop just locks people into subscriptions with forced AI credits even if you never use them. I actually hope this eventually forces ADOBE to make Photoshop free. Bc CANVA is extremely popular right now and the synergy of CANVA and AFFINITY if done correctly can strip away many Photoshop users.

Would love to see a similar partnership with Da Vinci Resolve & some of these newer video AI models.

Personally, Affinity V2 is still significantly better than GIMP for professional grade work

If you're a casual home user doing minor edits then GIMP is fine, but when I defected from Adobe I really struggled with GIMP until I eventually found Affinity

I can't speak to new Affinity, but I found V2 was even higher quality than Photoshop once I got used it it

You can get adobe at a discount if you chat them, just a heads up for people. Don't let it auto-renew...

I had a heated discussion with Adobe support when I wanted to cancel and they told me I wasn't allowed without paying a hefty fee. I told them I had taken screenshots of the sign up process, then suddenly they changed their minds and the fee was waived. Since then I learned just to avoid playing with fire.

You can still find it via other means. Currently have the original Affinity Deisgner. Wonder how all 3 compare.
