how in the world do they come up with a travel time of 19 hours 50 minutes when its "only" a 4 hours 35 minute layover? 15 hours in the air? that is one slow plane!

Probably because you always fly east on planes, you don't fly west. A plane from SF, though it would make sense to fly over the Pacific Ocean, flies all the way across Europe and Asia to get to Japan from the USA. Which takes a long ass time.
No it doesn't. I have done it like 10 times or so in my life to visit family. SF to Japan is a 11 hour flight on a average and you fly west over the Pacific Ocean and North over the north (not all the way to the pole, but very north following the curvature of the earth and optimizing the rotation of the earth. I now live in Texas and confirm that it takes much longer, not shorter which it would be based on your logic.

I got my East and my West backwards, that's the problem with living on a globe. One person's East is another person's West.

Yep, instead of taking the Great Circle, going to HI means going south to about the same latitude as Mexico City. A pretty big detour from a "normal" route that would take you near Alaska and Kamchatka if you went nonstop.

Great price, especially for a roundtrip ticket, but it does make me wonder if there are going to be an insane amount of hidden fees, or if this is that one airline that doesn't let you bring anything with you. Those are also some of the worst months to travel to Japan.
April is fantastic.

2 free checked bags are included; seat selection is extra.

We're frugal here, we value our time at $0/hr despite it actually worth much more Smilie

Saw these fares earlier. FYI, Hawaiian requires a phone call to cancel any flight reservations. Had to do it for my first booking which had a 12 hour layover.
