The SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB is a fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive that stands out for strong read and write speeds, DRAM, and solid everyday use as an OS, apps, games, or secondary drive. Firmware updates reportedly helped some drives keep near advertised performance, and long-term gaming use has stayed around 6500 MB per second for some installs. The main concern is a cache-related write slowdown that can return over time, with a few reports of instability or random reboots when used as a primary drive. It also runs fairly warm under heavy writes, so a heatsink helps.

  • Gamers using it as a secondary drive, because long-term gaming use stayed near advertised speeds with no BSOD issues.

  • PS5 owners adding a heatsink, because it works fine there and only runs warm under heavy writing.

  • Desktop builders who mostly install Windows and apps, because the drive can hold advertised speeds for light everyday use after the firmware update.

  • Video editors or other heavy sustained writers, because cache exhaustion can drop write speeds below Gen 3 levels over time.

  • Shoppers who need predictable long-term performance, because the cache fix may not hold and the drive can still develop speed drops or controller disconnects.

  • Laptop users relying on it as a primary system drive, because it can trigger random shutdowns and reboots even after the firmware update.

The logged events indicate so, and it makes sense that any failed cache or other caching issues on a primary drive would cause system instability. As a secondary drive, there's low risk.
I also saw similar reports from other users, so there could be differences in production runs.
The issue at hand here is that there is are several inherent risks when purchasing this drive. It's not to say all users will experience the same thing, but all users are at a risk of one or more undesirable outcomes.
If the drive is causing your issues, it's likely due to something other than the widely reported flaw. The bug in question tends to limit the write speed to ~2GB/s. That's still incredibly fast, and why I consider this to be one of the less serious SSD flaws. There are plenty of drives out there that can crater into the single-digit MB/s, without causing instability.

Yeah, it's fine for a PS5. You'll want to get a M.2 heatsink plate for the PS5 for this drive since it runs fairly hot when writing a lot, but otherwise I see no reason why this wouldn't work. It's got DRAM which has benefits over DRAM-less drives around this price, it's just a warm drive. Or you can simple go for any cheap m.2 heatsink and that will help with drive temperatures in general.
Example PS5 heatsink: https://www.amazon.com/SABRENT-He...QQWCL?th=1

As per a general overview of the P41 issues:
"The main issue with the SK Hynix Platinum P41 SSD is write performance degradation, where write speeds drop significantly over time because the drive's fast-write cache does not clear properly. A firmware update (version 51061A20) was released to fix this, but on Reddit, some users reported that the problem returned after a few weeks or the update was ineffective for them. Another potential, though less common, issue is occasional NVMe controller disconnects that cause a full system crash, requiring a power cycle to resolve."

I'm in both camps, lucky me.

P41 user here.
5500+ hours ON. Still 6500MB/s using for games on secondary drive with the original firmware. The main drive is a XPG S11 Pro 11000+ Hours ON.
No BSOD issues. Maybe a lucky one.

Unfortunately, that's not how this works...It's a deal compared to today's prices
This is the consumer expectation apparently, they're just fulfilling it.

This is companies doing corporate greed price gouging tactics.

This should be on clearance given its not gen5.

It's crazy how effectively the PC building market was made to be a victim of stockholm syndrome.

Completely agree and I just purchased on.

The two best companies IMHO are Samsung and Intel (in the day)...

SK Hynix has purchased Intel's SSD business (9 BILLION). I am not happy with Samsung for other product issues, I am not happy with Samsung regarding their customer service (again, about other products).

Today... WesternDigital Black is also considered Amazing and I believe Corsair's high end gen 4 has gotten the fewest complaints of all of these M.2's.

The issue with this drive is possible throttling on extremely large writes... to me, that is no big deal, cause while I may do about 100 a year... I could live with the throttle.

I mean, you're not wrong, but good luck holding out until prices get better. This AI madness is unlike anything before, and I guarantee you prices will remain stagnant or more likely get worse and it will continue for several years. Of course, it's possible the AI bubble might burst during that time, in which case prices will probably plummet.
