My dad refuses to change his number so we can't do this promo, but he's been using them for years with no issues. He calls phone numbers in Poland a few times a week.
There are some added taxes and fees. We usually get their $160/year plan, and it comes to about $190 total, though that may vary a bit by state.
Most people probably just use something like WhatsApp or FaceTime audio for calls, but if you have tech illiterate relatives abroad, there should be a chart on their website that shows which countries are included.

When I stepped through direct signup at infimobile.com, they were going to add hefty fees & taxes. Also charge a little for shipping with some normal delivery times that were cutting it close for my old plan cutoff. So I ordered direct via Amazon - none of those fees & taxes, though I was wary that I'd be required to pay on activation. I was not, and with prime got free next-day delivery too. Amazon did add my state's normal sales tax, but that was like $20 less than the cell service fees & taxes Infimobile requested.
International roaming has value for me, so I'll keep these guys in mind next year. But for now, I will just buy a temporary SIM from Orange or someone when I travel.
If it does not, google voice certainly would. Have your friends add the google voice number as a backup number to your contact info.
Both mint and ultra mobile use t-mobile I believe so the coverage would be the same.

Problems like what? I paid $60 for a year of infinimobile with 5GB per month and it's been flawless for me....purchased from amazon so there were not any additional fee's. Only hiccup I had to do was give it a different zip code when signing up because the small town I was giving it must not have had local numbers available. Picked a bigger town and worked fine to activate.
I forward google voice to whatever # they assign me so my contacts never see a difference. I also pick an out of state zip code so I can easily identify calls from the "local" area code that direct dialed instead of coming through google voice and auto reject the call using a free app called "SpamBlocker" from f-droid.org (open source app repo)
