I was able to buy LAX - HND - LAX for $404 end of Feb and LAX - KIX - LAX for $404 end of Jan. For a bit more ($429) you can do lax-hnd-kix-lax and for about $500 can make a 2-3 days stopoved in HNL.

Went last year and doing it again this year. I did the golden route Osaka Kyoto Tokyo.Its was very cold so pack layers if you arent used to the cold I got used to it after 2 days but I get used to the cold fast. There was no snow besides in Kyoto and only a few minutes out of the day.We didnt feel crowed at all I personally recommend it if you can handle the cold.

How do you change how long the layover is? I don't see an easy way to do that on the AA website

if youre staying in Osaka/Kansai (southern) region during January, you're staring at day time highs of around mid 40s - low 50s and then nights reaching mid to high 30s starting around 10/11pm. so if youre from the east coast and are used to winters, Japan in January (no matter where you stay) will be an absolute breeze as there is no real chance for snowfall or any extended amount of rain. just have a good thick hoody for the day time and always take a jacket atop of your hoody when you go out for dinner/night. the most important thing about traveling to japan (really anywhere) is to make sure you have great walking shoes.

I second this. It's up to what you are used to. I am from the US Midwest, and the winters in Japan are to me like April where I live. Even in the snowy areas it feels like warm winter days. But if you are from southern Cal, for instance, that's different.

To those of us who can easily withstand the cool weather in Japan, January and February are a great time to visit. This is one time during the year when the humidity is low, the crowds are smaller, and prices come down.
