Community Reviews
This Frigidaire Gallery nugget ice maker is valued for making soft, chewable nugget ice at a lower Costco price than many rivals, with the side water tank design drawing favorable comparisons to the GE Opal. It can work well for months and Costco returns are easy if it fails. The main drawbacks are frequent cleaning, mineral buildup, and reports of screeching, leaks, warmth, or early breakdowns. Distilled water and regular descaling help, but upkeep is a real part of ownership.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. The pumps and auger can build up minerals or freeze over, which can cause screeching and off-smelling ice. Distilled or filtered water helps reduce scale, and vinegar-water or other descaling routines are used to keep it running properly.
Prices mentioned range from $99.99 to $139.97, with one store showing $129.97 two weeks earlier. The deal appears to vary by location and stock, and some stores had only a few units left.
Some units run well for months, but failures after about 6 to 12 months are reported, including units that stop making ice or die entirely. Costco's return policy makes replacement or refund straightforward if it fails.
The Frigidaire's side water tank is viewed as a practical advantage over the GE Opal, and some prefer its overall value. The ice texture is different, though: it makes more broken nugget-style bits rather than the softer chewable Opal-style ice.
It can be noisy, and some units drip water when the drawer is opened, which can leave water on the countertop. Reports also mention the machine warming the kitchen and running constantly when ice melts quickly.

edit: BTW, the OG Opal has a short (IMHO) cleaning cycle, so I run it 2-3 times before draining.
The combo of how noisy it was and how much we had to clean up after each use meant it went back.
