An opal is over twice the price of this Frigidaire ice maker....not even a comparison.

Good deal. Was $139.97 at my local Costco, but I never saw it there even though I check the small appliance and cookware aisles practically every time I go there (about 3-5 times per month). I could use one for a Christmas party we are hosting. Any other deals?

i bought the opal 2.0 when woot had refurbs 2-3 months ago. worked for a day before going bonkers with shrieking sounds at night. scared the hell out of everyone. returned and entirely put me off the idea of owning a icemaker.
yes i realize i likely got sent a lemon
139 from costco though sounds interesting

$139 on this at my Costco, but they only had about 4 left, so even if I returned tomorrow they'd be long gone. Wife said we haven't killed our OG First Build Opal yet, so no need to spend the dough.
I've heard reports of this shrieking noise, but I can figure out what it could be...maybe a fan? We use distilled water in ours and have never had an issue in years.

it is the pumps pumping water in to the machine. This is why they need to be cleaned so often, if you don't the pumps screech like crazy from the build up of minerals/lime. We have one that we use frequently and it screeches for a while then kinda clears up for a while, and so on.

I see...reverse osmosis or distilled would resolve the problem, then..even doing nothing else it will dissolve the scale buildup in time. I periodically clean mine, but for biofilm/slime prevention, not scale.

50/50 vinegar/water works well too, to descale them.

Hence the recommendation to clean so frequently...it takes many treatments to resolve actual scale issues, especially in cold water devices. Coffee/espresso machines have the advantage of adding heat to speed up the descaling process. I generate my own hypochlorous acid (think safe bleach) to rinse and sanitize my Opal.

I bought one as well and it came in looking like the printer from office space.
