Merrell Thermo Akita Mid Waterproof Boots stand out as warm, waterproof winter hikers that work well for wet, cold conditions and still feel comfortable after a short break in. The boots are described as keeping feet warm and dry for hours on muddy fall hikes, and the price under $50 shipped makes the deal feel especially strong. Fit runs tricky, though, with medium width reported as narrower than usual and several sizing notes pointing to going up half a size. The wide option and quick break in help, making this a practical cold weather pick if sizing is chosen carefully.

Common Questions (3)

  • The Medium width runs narrower than usual, and the style appears to fit narrow enough that some buyers had to return their normal size. Going up about half a size is a practical fix, and the Wide option is the safer choice if you usually need roomier Merrell hikers.

  • They can feel uncomfortable at first, but they break in quickly and become comfortable after a few wears. One fit report says a usual 10W fit fine and felt comfortable after the first walk, while another says the initial sole discomfort disappeared after about a month.

  • They keep feet warm and dry for hours in wet, muddy PNW fall conditions, making them suitable for cold-weather hiking. They can also be used outside winter; one referenced use case was 80-degree weather during a 3-mile run and 5-mile hike without hot feet.

I bought these the last time they were on sale. For $50, I am happy. Initially I didn't find the soul to be comfortable, but they broke in quick and I don't even notice an issue any longer. I've had them for about a month now. I would bite at this price if I were in need today.

I got these last month and had to return them. I reliably fit in size 11M in most shoes, including 2 other models of Merrell hikers that I've owned for a while. The Akitas appear to run narrow.

I saw some guy talk about using these in 80 degree and his feet didn't get hot from 3 mile run and 5 mile hike. Anyone who owns can these be used outside winter?

Noo. I saw they have wide in these. All the Merrell deals I saw were just medium so this is what drew me in. Damn

I got these a month ago for both me and my partner, and we're both loving them for going on wet, cold, PNW fall hikes. Keeps our feet warm and dry for hours in wet and muddy conditions.

For sizing, I'm usually an 8.5 in Merrells, but I had to return my 8.5s and go up to a 9. My partner is a 6.5 wide in Merrells, but they didn't have women's wide in her size so we did a 7 and they fit her perfectly. So I'd suggest going a half size up from your normal size in either the men's or women's version.

Also the Earth color is a bit more brown and muted than they look in the photos - I got those as they were out of my size in black, and I actually like the touch of color even though I usually prefer black everything.

They've taken a couple hikes to break in, but they're getting more comfortable the more we wear them. We both plan to put insoles in them to help with that, but they're really comfortable out of the box.

At this price, I'd buy them again, no question.

Can't speak to this model directly, but I have their MOAB 3 in 13W, and they fit me perfectly.

Right in the description:
With waterproof coated leather, a waterproof membrane, and 200g of warm insulation, you can depend on this cold-weather boot to protect against the elements this season.
