For sizing, I'm usually an 8.5 in Merrells, but I had to return my 8.5s and go up to a 9. My partner is a 6.5 wide in Merrells, but they didn't have women's wide in her size so we did a 7 and they fit her perfectly. So I'd suggest going a half size up from your normal size in either the men's or women's version.
Also the Earth color is a bit more brown and muted than they look in the photos - I got those as they were out of my size in black, and I actually like the touch of color even though I usually prefer black everything.
They've taken a couple hikes to break in, but they're getting more comfortable the more we wear them. We both plan to put insoles in them to help with that, but they're really comfortable out of the box.
At this price, I'd buy them again, no question.
Community Reviews
Merrell Thermo Akita Mid Waterproof Boots stand out as warm, waterproof winter hikers that work well for wet, cold conditions and still feel comfortable after a short break in. The boots are described as keeping feet warm and dry for hours on muddy fall hikes, and the price under $50 shipped makes the deal feel especially strong. Fit runs tricky, though, with medium width reported as narrower than usual and several sizing notes pointing to going up half a size. The wide option and quick break in help, making this a practical cold weather pick if sizing is chosen carefully.
Common Questions (3)
The Medium width runs narrower than usual, and the style appears to fit narrow enough that some buyers had to return their normal size. Going up about half a size is a practical fix, and the Wide option is the safer choice if you usually need roomier Merrell hikers.
They can feel uncomfortable at first, but they break in quickly and become comfortable after a few wears. One fit report says a usual 10W fit fine and felt comfortable after the first walk, while another says the initial sole discomfort disappeared after about a month.
They keep feet warm and dry for hours in wet, muddy PNW fall conditions, making them suitable for cold-weather hiking. They can also be used outside winter; one referenced use case was 80-degree weather during a 3-mile run and 5-mile hike without hot feet.
